Brief History of the Royal Philatelic Society, London (RSPL):
The Royal Philatelic Society was formed 150 Years ago at 41 Devonshire Place, London. Presently, it has a membership of over 2,400 members in around 80 countries (1500 overseas members and about 900 members in the United Kingdom), which constitutes the highest numbers of members in the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Members are of two classes - Fellows and Members.
On 10.04.1869, it was set up as The Philatelic Society, London (its earlier name) at a meeting at 93 Great Russell Street in the premises of a stamp dealer J.C. Wilson.
Fellows are elected from members based on service to the Society and to Philately.
In 11/1906, permission to use the prefix "Royal" was granted by King Edward VII.
From 1893 to 1910, Prince George, the then Duke of York and later King George V, who was an enthusiastic stamp collector, served as honorary vice-president of the Society. His father King Edward VII had a large stamp collection, which he gave to Prince George, which became known as the "Royal Philatelic Collection".
Upon his coronation as King, George V stayed with the Society as its royal patron.
His second son, George VI continued to expand the royal collection.
The present patron is Queen Elizabeth II, who is not a philatelist herself, but the royal family has maintained tradition and added to the Royal Philatelic Collection from time to time.
The Society manages a postal museum called The Museum of Philatelic History" at its Devonshire Place Headquarters in London. Every September, at a special meeting of the Society, part of the "Royal Philatelic Collection is displayed by its keeper.
The Museum holds a collection of internationally significant objects, the collection of which began shortly after the Soci9ety's inception in 1869 and has grown and expanded into the vast collection it is today.

The Society publishes a journal, "The London Philatelist" which includes articles. book reviews, society news, advertisements and other items.
The principal objectives of the Society are:
- to promote, encourage and contribute to the advancement of the science and practice of philately.
- to inform members of the Society on all matters affecting any of its objects by meetings, discussions, displays, lectures, correspondence or otherwise, to assist and carry out philatelic research, and to print, publish and issue such papers, periodicals, books, circulars or other literary matters in support of these objects.
- to hold, either alone or jointly with others, promote, or subscribe, or assist with international or other philatelic exhibitions in the UK or elsewhere, and to offer and award prizes, medals or other recognition in connection with such exhibitions or for any literary work connected with philately.
- to establish and maintain a library and collections of stamps, designs, proofs, essays and other articles of interest relating to any of the objects of the Society.
The Mission Statement of the Philatelic Museum:
"To create and maintain a world-leading Philatelic Museum whose activities assist the Royal Philatelic Society London's charitable aim in promoting education".
The Society awards several medals too:
- The Crawford Medal for the most valuable and original contribution to the study and knowledge of philately published in book form during the two years preceding the award.
- The Tilleard Medal for the best large display of any aspect of philately given by one, or not more than two, fellows or members during the relevant period.
- The Lee Medal for the best paper dealing with any aspect of philately given by one fellow or member during the relevant period.
- The Tapling Medal for the best paper written by a fellow or member and published in "The Londin Philatelist" during the relevant period.
"The Royal" as the Philatelic Society is universally known has set up a website whose aims are to :
- make the services of the Society available to fellows and members who cannot visit the Society in London.
- fulfil the Society's charitable objectives by making information and resources available to the worldwide philatelic community.
A Commemorative Cover issued by the Gibraltar Post on 21.10.2019:
The Commemorative Cover is titled "GIBRALTAR - The Royal Philatelic Society London 150th Anniversary Limited Edition Commemorative Cover".
Seen on the Cover stamps are various pictures of the Gibraltar Rock.
This limited edition Commemorative Cover of only 500 editions has been issued by Gibraltar Post. A commemorative event also took place at Gibraltar's iconic Garrisons Library, where several high value collections were exhibited.
Out of the 500 Commemorative Covers issued, the number "098" is seen on the above image for illustration purposes only. The 500 Covers are serially numbered on a "First Come First Served" basis.
The Special Cancellation Handstamp/Postmark bears the initials/emblem of the "Royal Philatelic Society of London" in the centre and the cancellation is of Gibraltar Head Post Office. The Cancellation is dated: "21.10.2019".
