The Central Bank of Ireland has issued a limited edition silver commemorative coin (on 27.11.2018) to celebrate 100 years since Irish women won the right to vote.
Under the Representation of the People Act 1918, Irish women received this right to vote on 06.02.1918.
In November 1918, the Parliament (Qualification of Women) Act was passed allowing women to be elected to Parliament in Westminster for the first time - a significant milestone in the path to equality in Ireland.
The Commemorative Coin:
This limited edition Commemorative Coin has been issued to celebrate this significant centenary.
On the Reverse of the 15 Euro Silver Coin is depicted the figure of a suffragette resolutely holding a banner demanding the vote for Irish women.
Behind her silhouette is a procession of confident and determined women marching forward to represent the progress in equality from 1918 onwards to the present day. They stride along a road painted in the colours of the suffragette movement in Ireland. This is the first Irish commemorative coin to feature colour since the Special Olympics in 2003 .

The harp is one of the oldest musical instruments in the world and the National Emblem of Ireland.
The harp was introduced to pre-Christian Europe by the Phoenicians who brought it over from Egypt as one as one of their international trading goods. In the days of old chieftains, harpists were held in great regard. They used to convey many stories/legends through their music on harps, travelling throughout Ireland performing folk songs.
In the 16th Century, the music of the harp was perceived as a threat by the British Crown, who attempted to crush the Irish spirit by ordering all harps to be burnt and all harpists executed.
It was almost 200 years later in 1792, when the music of the harp was freely enjoyed again in Ireland.
The image of the harp has become a national symbol of Ireland and appears on all Irish coins and is the logo for Guinness - considered to be Ireland's national drink, among its other representations.
