The US Mint's "American Innovation $1 Coin Programme" is a multi year Coin Series honouring Innovation and innovators with $1 Coins from each State, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, US Virgin Islands and Northern Mariana Islands. The coins under this Coin Series will be released over a 14 year period.

Under the Coin Programme, each of these States or Territories is required to identify concepts emblematic of an innovation, an innovator, or a group of innovators unique to that location and significant to the country's progress.

The final designs to be struck on the State or Territory's representative coins will be decided by the Secretary of the Treasury.

Interestingly, no new dollar coins are officially placed into general circulation. The last dollar coins placed in circulation were the 2011 James A. Garfield dollars released under the Presidential Dollar Programme, particularly because of the large inventory of dollar coins held in Federal Reserve vaults, with demand for dollar coins being abysmally low among users.

The Pennsylvania Coin:

Pennsylvania is the second of the States to be highlighted in the American Innovation $1 Coin Programme, with the release of this coin slated for 11.10.2019. 

The Coin is being made available in four options - A 25-Coin Roll (both from the Philadelphia "P" & Denver "D" Mints) and a 100 Coin Bag (from both the mints - "P" & "D").

The Reverse of the $1 Coin recognises the creation of a vaccine to prevent polio. 

The design depicts an artist's conception of the Polio virus at three different levels of magnification along with the silhouette of a period microscope, representing the extensive research that was conducted to develop a cure for Polio.

The inscriptions on this face are - "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "POLIO VACCINE - 1953" and "PENNSYLVANIA".

The Obverse of the $1 Coin features a dramatic representation of the Statue of Liberty in profile, facing left, which is common to all the Coins issued under this Series.

The inscriptions are - the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "$1". The design on this face also carries a privy mark of a stylised gear, representing industry and innovation.

Edge Inscriptions: The Edge-incused inscriptions are "2019", mint mark ("P" or "D") and the motto "E.PLURIBUS UNUM" (meaning "One Out of Many").

Denomination: $1 or One dollar; Metal Composition: Copper - 88%, Zinc - 6%, Manganese - 3.5%, Nickel - 2%; Weight: 8.1 grams; Diameter/Size: 1.043 inches (or 26.49 mm); Edge: Lettered; Coin Quality: Uncirculated; Mints and Mint marks: Philadelphia "P" and Denver "D"; Reverse Designer: Richard Masters; Year of issue: 2019.

Dollar coins featuring "American Innovations" from two more States are scheduled to be released later this month, by the US Mint. The coins representing Delaware and Pennsylvania have been issued, while the coins from Georgia and New Jersey are also scheduled to be released in 10/2019.

A four coin set being minted by the San Francisco Mint:

The Proof Coin Set (4 Coins) minted by the San Francisco Mint will also be available from  11.10.2019.

The Reverse designs celebrate significant innovations from Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Georgia. 

 Four beautiful Proof coins with sharp relief and a mirror-like background with frosted foregrounds, giving them a special cameo effect are included in this set minted by the San Francisco Mint.

Delaware:

The Delaware $1 Coin recognises astronomer Annie Jump Cannon who developed a system for classifying the stars that is still used today. The design features a silhouette of Annie against the night sky, with several stars visible in the background.

Pennsylvania:

 New Jersey:

The New Jersey $1 Coin honours the development of a light bulb with a filament that could last 1,200 hours. This design features an Edison bulb against an ornate background.

Georgia:

The Georgia $1 Coin recognises the Trustees' Garden, established in the 1730s. It was the first agricultural experimental garden in America. The design depicts a hand planting seeds in the inscription "TRUSTEES' GARDEN", from which grows a variety of species representing the variety of plants grown in the garden - an orange tree seedling, sassafras, grapes, white mulberry, flax, peaches, olive and a young shoot too small to be identified.

The Back Cover explains what are "Privy Marks" as included in the Obverse design:

 "Privy Marks were originally used on coins to reflect their mint of origin or an aspect of their production or design. More recently, they have been used as design, brand identity, or marketing features. An eagle privy mark from an original coin punch identified at the US Mint at Philadelphia appeared on the American Eagle Platinum Bullion coins "Preamble to the Constitution" series from 2009 to 2014.

 The 2019 "American Innovation" $1 Coin privy mark symbolises the quintessentially American traits of exploration, discovery and innovation".
