The Bank of England is featuring the eminent 19th Century painter JMW Turner, who was one of Britain's greatest painters of Britain on the 20 Pound Polymer Banknote in its current "G" Series of Banknotes
It is the first time that an artist is appearing on a British Banknote.
JMW Turner renowned for his dramatic landscapes beat off competition from 590 painters, sculptors, fashion designers, photographers, film makers and actors put forward by some 30,000 members of the public. Interestingly, the public was asked to nominate deceased cultural figures only.
The list included Alfred Hitchcock, Alexander McQueen, Derek Jarman, Laura Ashley, Francis Bacon, William Morris and Vanessa Bell, which was narrowed down by a select panel of artists, critics and historians to a final choice of five - Barbara Hepworth, Charlie Chaplin, Josiah Wedgewood, William Hogarth and JMW Turner - who were selected on the basis of their unquestioned contribution to both the visual arts and British Society as a whole, as well as, their enduring influence.

More about JMW Turner:
He was born in 1775 AD in London, the son of a barber, and he entered the Royal Academy Schools at the age of 14.
It was in 1786 AD, when he was sent to Margate, that his interest in painting and drawing the North-east Kent coast began. He would return to that coast throughout his life, describing it as - "the loveliest in all Europe".
Turner was a particularly prolific artist, producing more than 550 oil paintings, 2,000 watercolours and 30,000 paper works over his lifetime.
Curiously, JMW Turner was known for never having actually signing any of his works, as such, his signature was copied from his last will and testament, which was a document bequeathing much of his works to the nation and is placed below his self-portrait.
Turner's contribution to art stretched well beyond his favourite stretch of shoreline. His paintings were transformative, his influence spanned lifetimes and his legacy endures today.
The 20 Pound Banknote:
The 20 Pound Banknote:
Fittingly, the announcement of the new Banknote was made at the Turner Contemporary Gallery in Margate, which stands at the former site of Mrs. Booth's lodging house, where Turner would always stay when he visited. The Gallery is a permanent display venue in the picturesque seaside town of Margate on England's South-east coast.
Emblazoned on the Banknote will be a quote from the artist - "light is therefore colour", along with his signature taken from his will, in which he bequeathed many of his works to the nation.
The new 20 Pounds Banknote will replace the one featuring social philosopher and economic theorist Adam Smith and will enter circulation on 20.02.2020.
Turner's self-portrait (made in 1799 AD) and currently on display in Tate Museum, Britain, would predominantly feature on the Back of the Banknote.
The concept of the 20 Pounds Polymer Banknote
The Back of the 20 Pounds Polymer Banknote as it would actually look, upon being released for circulation by the Bank of England (BOE) on 20.02.2020. (A specimen).

The 20 Pounds Banknote will retain its currently predominant purple colour and also retains the same portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, as originally introduced in 1990 with the issue of the "E" Series 5 Pound Banknotes.
As with the newest 5 and 10 Pound polymer denominations already in circulation, the dimensions of the new 20 Pounds Polymer Banknote have been reduced from its current size of 149.0 mm x 80.0 mm to 139 mm x 73 mm.
The additional features of the new Polymer 20 Pounds Banknote include:
- A large see-through window with a blue and gold foil on the face depicting Margate Lighthouse and Turner Contemporary gallery. The foil is silver on the Back. The shape of the large window is based on the shape of the fountains in Trafalgar Square.
- A smaller see-through window in the bottom corner of the Banknote is inspired by Tintem Abbey.
- JMW Turner's self-portrait, painted in 1799 AD, is currently on display in Tate Britain.
- One of Turner's most eminent paintings "The Fighting Temeraire", a tribute to the ship HMS Temeraire which played a distinguished role in Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The painting is currently on display in the National Gallery.
- A metallic hologram which changes between the words "Twenty" and "Pounds"when the Banknote is tilted.
- The Queen's portrait in the see-through window with "20 Pounds Bank of England" printed twice around the edge.
- A silver foil patch with a 3-D image of the coronation crown.
- A purple foil patch containing the letter "T" based on the staircase at the Tate Britain.
- A quote, "Light is therefore colour" from an 1818 lecture by Turner referring to the innovative use of light, shade, colour and tone of his pictures.
- Turner's signature from his will, the document with which he bequeathed many of his paintings to the nation.
The Banknote of the "G" Series will look like the above representation, when they are put into circulation.
