2021 marks the 75th Anniversary of the birth of the Ferrero Company.

Pietro Ferrero owned a bakery in Alba, Piedmont, an Italian town known for the production of hazelnuts.

In 1946, he sold the initial 300 kilograms (660 lb) batch of Pasta Gianduja, derived from Gianduja. Originally sold as a solid block, Ferrero started to sell a creamy version in 1951 as "Supercrema gianduja".

The result of Michele Ferrero's genius, Nutella® was born from the union of "NUT," (a hazelnut in English), and "ELLA", (an Italian suffix with a sweet and positive sound).

Derived from Granduja, a mix of chocolate and hazelnut that itself was the result of Napoleon’s blockade of British goods (the main supplier of cocoa), it morphed into Nutella in 1964

In 1963, Ferrero's son Michele Ferrero revamped Supercrema gianduja with the intention of marketing it throughout Europe. Its composition was modified, and it was renamed "Nutella".

The first jar of Nutella left the factory in Alba on April 20, 1964. The product was an instant success and remains widely popular.

Thus began a page of history of "excellence of Made in ltaly" and a product that has become a symbol of Italianness in the world.

In 2012, French senator Yves Daudigny proposed a tax increase on palm oil from €100 to €400 per tonne. At 20 percent, palm oil is one of Nutella's main ingredients, and the tax was dubbed "the Nutella tax" in the media.

Made by the Ferrero Corporation to this day, it has enabled the company to be the second biggest chocolate and confectionary company in the world today, with sales in excess of $11 billion per annum.

Still a privately held company, it remains under the Ferrero family, and produces around 365,000 tonnes of Nutella every year.

An Italian icon, Nutella has been commemorated with a set of three coloured coins - Red, Green and White - from the Italian Mint, IPZS, as part of their Italian Excellence range.

The Commemorative Coin:

On the Reverse of the Five Euro Silver Coin,  at the center, is depicted the largest Italian plant of the Ferrero Group: the Alba plant, Cuneo, where the company specialized in confectionery products, and which was founded in the forties.

The Coin has been minted with three coloured variants - Red, Green and White - (depicting the colours of the jars in which Nutella is marketed).
