The Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato (IPZS) (State Mint and Polygraphic Institute) will release on 04.04.2022, the first gold Proof coin which begins a new Coin Series titled - “The Fountains of Italy,” which will highlight some of the country’s most memorable and artistic fountains.
The function of public fountains in Rome, spanning back to the eighth century, was both aesthetic as well as practical, providing drinking water and artistic expression of the local artisans.
The Trevi Fountain:

The Trevi Fountain (Italian: "Fontana di Trevi") is an 18th-century fountain in the Trevi district in Rome, Italy, designed by Italian architect Nicola Salvi and completed by Giuseppe Pannini and several others. It was constructed between 1732 to 1762.
The name of the Latin fountain derives from the Latin word "Trivium" (meaning "intersection of three streets"). The statue is located right in the center of De 'Crocicchi Street, Poli Street and Delle Muratte Street.
The fountain at the junction of three roads (tre vie) marks the terminal point of the "modern" Acqua Vergine, the revived Aqua Virgo, one of the aqueducts that supplied water to ancient Rome.
Standing 26.3 metres (86 ft) high and 49.15 metres (161.3 ft) wide, it is the largest Baroque fountain in the city and one of the most famous fountains in the world. Its surface is made of Traveltine stone.
In 19 BC, supposedly with the help of a virgin, Roman technicians located a source of pure water some 13 km (8.1 miles) from the city. (This scene is presented on the present fountain's façade.) However, the eventual indirect route of the aqueduct made its length some 22 km (14 miles).
This Aqua Virgo led the water into the Baths of Agrippa which served Rome for more than 400 years.
During the sixth century the aqueducts were not well maintained and the 14 functioning ones were damaged following the invasion of the Ostrogoths.
The virgin water aqueduct carries the water to the Trevi fountain, after having collected it 10 km from the Italian capital.
The aqueduct is still in use today, despite some interventions during which the fountain remained empty.
The fountain has appeared in several films, including "Roman Holiday" (1953), the eponymous "Three Coins in the Fountain" (1954), Federico Fellini's classic "La Dolce Vita" (1960), "Sabrina Goes to Rome" (1998), and "The Lizzie McGuire Movie" (2003).
The Coin:
The Reverse of the 10 Euro Gold Coin presents a detail from the Trevi Fountain in Rome with a horse held by a triton.
Above the primary design is the inscription "FONTANA DI TREVI"; and to the left is the year of issue "2022", (the year of the coin’s issue); on the right, "R", (Mint Mark of the Mint of Rome) is seen; below is engraved the denominational value of the coin - "10 EURO".
The Obverse of the 10 Euro Gold Coin depicts a typical fountain of Rome nicknamed "il Nasone” because of the curved shape of its spout which resembles a “big nose”.
To the left, in a circular pattern, are typical pavement stones known as the "sampietrini”, (meaning "the cobblestones") that characterize the streets and squares of the many historic centres of the capital and are a familiar sight.
On the right of the fountain is the name of the designer - "CASSOL" (in a vertical direction) and, on the left, superimposed over the stones is the arch-shaped inscription/text "REPUBBLICA ITALIANA” (name of the issuing country).
