2391) Rupees Ten Coins, India: 2005-present:

2391) Rupees Ten Coins, India: 2005-present:

When I was trying to upload a new design Rs.10 (Ten Rupee) Coin brought for me from New Delhi by Jayant, I realised that I have not written a post on this denomination of Indian Coins.

I began to frantically search through my collection of Rs.10 (Ten Rupee) Coins to put up a post on this denomination. Although I have the entire Series in my collection, I have put up only those coins which I could gather up in a hurry.

The Ten Rupee Coins were first introduced into circulation in 2005.

Four different designs (apart from Commemorative Coins) have been put into circulation at various intervals. All the designs continue to be legal tender and circulate alongside the Ten Rupees Banknote.

A Brief:

The 2005 issues had the theme - "Unity in Diversity".

The design on the Reverse featured "Four heads sharing a common body" - cross with a dot in each quadrant in the centre with the lettering "Dus Rupiya" (in Hindi) and "Ten Rupees" (in English) on the outer periphery.

The Coin design on the denominations resembled  Denier Coins of Louis XIV of France which all contained a Christian Cross in their design.

There was an immediate uproar on social media that the Indian Government was pandering to a particular religious group ,as such, the design was last minted in 2006 and discontinued thereafter.

This 2006 issue was minted by the Noida Mint (Dot Mint Mark below the Year of issue)

On the Obverse this coin featured the legend "Bharat" (in Hindi) and "India" on the upper periphery. In the centre between two lines was featured the Emblem of India at left, with the Lion Capitol and the inscription "Satyamev Jayate" (in Hindi - meaning "Truth Always Prevails") below it and the denominational numeral "10" at right.

The specifications of this Coin are:

Denomination: Rupees Ten Rs.10); Weight: 7.74 grams; Diameter: 27.00 mm; Edge: Plain; Metal Composition: Outer Ring: Nickel Brass, Centre: Nickel Silver.

The 2008 issues had the theme - "Connectivity & Technology".

The Reverse of this design featured 15 notches on top, the numeral "10" in the centre and the denomination in words on the lower periphery -"Rupiye" (in Hindi) and "RUPEES" in English.

Some analysts/collectors suggested that the design resembled the feathers of a "dancing peacock" which is the National Bird of India, while some are of the view that the notches represent 15 droplets of rain.

Both the above Coins were minted by the Mumbai Mint (Diamond Mint Mark below the Year of issue)

The Obverse of this design had the name of the issuing country - "Bharat" (in Hindi) and "India" (in English) on top. However, the denomination had moved to the Reverse, as such only the Emblem of India featured in the Centre between two lines.

The specifications of this Coin are:

Denomination: Rupees Ten Rs.10); Weight: 7.74 grams; Diameter: 27.00 mm; Edge: Plain; Metal CompositionOuter Ring: Nickel Brass, Centre: Nickel Silver.

When the  Rupee symbol was introduced in 2011 the Rupee symbol moved further below into the outer ring of the coin, leading to rumours that the 2008 to 2010 Coin Designs were fake/counterfeit. The distrust grew to an extent that users stopped using/accepting the old design coins altogether.

The Reserve Bank of India was forced to issue a clarification that all earlier issues prior to 2011 were also legal tender.

There was a hilarious incident at Khajuraho (MP), when we parked our vehicle at a Car Park. The attendant offered to give me 100 ten Rupee Coins of the old design thinking that I was accepting demonetised currency. However, once I had paid for them, he wanted to know what I would do with them.

When I told him that as these coins are no longer being minted, they will gain in Collector value after some time and, that they were all legal tender, after my clarification, he wanted them back.

The 2011 issues did not have a specific theme.

The Reverse of the Coin in this issue carried 10 notches (instead of the 15 in the 2008 issues) with the Rupee symbol  "₹" below it and the numeral "10" further below, moving down into the outer ring.
