Armoured vehicles - British Mk VIII Cromwell Tank:
The first gold coin of the Czech Mint from the "Cycle of Armoured Vehicles Coin Series" features the British Mk VIII Cromwell Tank, which served during the Second World War.
The so-called cruiser tanks, which formed the backbone of the British armoured forces in the inter-war period, were to operate independently of the infantry and heavy infantry tanks that accompanied it.
They were designed to carry out forays deep into enemy territory and relied almost entirely on speed.
The extraordinary mobility of these tanks went hand in hand with their low weight, and therefore they had only thin armor and weak armament.
When cruiser tanks in France and Africa clashed with much more powerful German counterparts, the British General Staff realized that they had to reconsider their existing concept.
This is why the first heavy cruiser tank was created, which was given the name "Cromwell". Its armour and firepower could match medium tanks, but it remained nimble.
Thanks to the powerful and reliable Rolls-Royce Meteor engine, derived from the famous Merlin aircraft engine, which powered Spitfire fighters, for example, it became the fastest British tank of the war years.
Cromwell Tanks were first deployed during the Normandy landings in 1944.
At that time, the British tank regiments were mainly armed with American Shermans, but the Cromwells also intervened in the fighting in Europe. They gave the British tankmen the opportunity to be equal rivals of the Germans Tanks.
The Coin:
The Reverse of the $5 (Five Dollars - NZD) Gold Proof Commemorative Coin, presents two depictions of a British tank – a three-quarter view is accompanied by a side silhouette.
The composition is completed by a copy of the Mk VIII Cromwell and a detail of the tank track.
The Obverse of the $5 (Five Dollars - NZD) Gold Proof Commemorative Coin, depicts tank tracks on the outer periphery.
The Obverse design is common to the entire tank series.
Since the license to issue commemorative coins of the Czech Mint is provided by the Pacific island nation of Niue, the Obverse face also bears its necessary attributes – the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II., the nominal value of "5 DOLLARS (NZD)" and the year of issue "2022".
