The design on the 2019 coin presents an unusual perspective - it shows the Philippine eagle's head from the front, showcasing its impressive feather bonnet.
About the Philippine Eagle:
The Philippine Eagle is the national bird of the Philippines. This majestic predator makes its home in the Philippine rain-forest. Hardly visible from the ground its nest is up in the tree-tops at heights reaching 50.0 metres (or 164.0 feet) and it can easily cover an area of about 50.0 square miles.
This species was first reported in 1896 and its extra-ordinary wide wings allow it to easily manoeuvre through the jungle trees.
With only about 200-400 breeding pairs, the Philippine Eagle is an endangered species and is listed as one of the twelve most endangered species. These birds live exclusively in the Philippines, hence they derive their name.
Even though their feathered bonnet reminds one of certain monkeys, the connection between these eagles and monkeys is of a different kind - they are also known as monkey-eating eagles. Even though its diet includes macaques, the monkey eating eagle also preys on other smaller mammals like bats, birds and reptiles.
Like the Chinese pandas, breeding pairs of the Philippines Eagle are now given as diplomatic gifts to zoos of allied nations.
The Coin:
The three-dimensional Smartminting relief combined with a concave shape generates an impression of an outstanding beak. A glossy finish of the eagle's eyes are a highlight of this partially coloured coin.
