1069) "Sinraptor" ("Sinraptor dongi") : Fifth Coin in the "Evolution of Life Coin Series" brought out by Coin Invest Trust on behalf of the Republic of Mongolia: Coin minted by B.H. Mayer's Kunstprageanstalt GmbH issued in 08/2019:
Coin Invest Trust (CIT) presented its large and diverse collection of new stunning, High Relief Coin releases spanning a wide range of topics, shapes and designs in the recently concluded 2019 edition of the World Fair of Money (WFM) organised by the American Numismatic Association (ANA) in Chicago in 08/2019.
About the "Evolution of Life Coin Series":
Among some 20 coins presented by CIT in the WFM, was the fifth coin in the "Evolution of Life Coin Series" showcasing the "Sinraptor".
Mongolia is famous for its rich fossil record, including dramatic species like the "Velociraptor" - popularised by the Jurassic Park Movies.
The "Evolution of Life Coin Series" pays tribute to past eras by portraying extinct prehistoric creatures in luxurious rose-gilded Smartminting High Relief on an antique finish rock matrix background for Silver Coins and portrayed on Gold Coins.
The first issue in the "Evolution of Life " Coin series was the "Ammonite" from the Devonian Period - 419 million to 350 million years ago (issued in 2015), the second coin featured the "Trilobite" - from the Ordovician Period - 440 million to 500 million years ago (issued in 2016), the third coin featured the "Ichthyosaur" from the Mesozoic Era - "The age of the reptiles" - 70 million to 225 million years ago (2017), while for the fourth coin in the Series, the theme moved from the sea to the skies with "Pterosauria", which showcased the native "Noripterus parvus" that roamed the Mongolian skies 140 million years ago, which had a wing-span of over four metres, whose fossils were first described from Central Mongolia by a Chinese/Canadian team in 1987 (Coin issued in 2018).
The 2019 edition of the "Evolution of Life" Coin Series showcases the "Sinraptor" (the name coming from the Latin prefix "Sino" meaning "Chinese" and "Raptor meaning "Robber". The Sinraptor was officially discovered/recognised only about 32 years ago in China with an almost complete skeleton/fossil. As such, it can be considered a "new" dinosaur.

In 1987, a Sino-Canadian expedition known as the "Dinosaur Project" discovered a large therapod skeleton in the Upper Jurassic Shishugou Formation of the Junggar Basin in Northwestern China. The well-preserved skeleton lacks much of the tail and most of the arms, but is otherwise nearly complete.
The new genus and species - "Sinraptor dongi" represents a poorly understood stage of therapod evolution.
"Sinraptor" has a large pneumatopore in the jugal, a pronounced postorbital rugosity, a relatively long intertemporal bar in which the postorbital appears very short in lateral aspect and a pneumatic palatine.
The fossil discovered in China measured some 3.0 metres (or about 9.8 feet) in height and 7.6 metres (or about 25.0 feet) in length. Interestingly, the Sinraptor is estimated to have weighed over a ton. The Sinraptor is believed to have lived some 150 million years ago during the Jurassic Period (135 to 180 million years ago) in the Mesozoic Era (70 to 225 million years ago) and may have hunted medium-sized dinosaurs.
