1164) Edelweiss (Mountain Star), Swiss Alps, Mongolia: minted under the series titled "Numismatic Sculptures": Commemorative Gold Coins of 1000 Togrog and Silver Coins of 500 Togrog, issued by Coin Invest Trust (CIT) and minted by B.H. Mayer's Kunstprageanstalt, Munich for Mongolia:

Coin Invest Trust (CIT) has brought out these Gold and Silver variants depicting the Edelweiss , under its product series titled - "Numismatic Sculptures". The coin design is a lifelike imitation of this mountain plant - which is believed to have been the downfall of many mountaineers.

From the beginning of the 19th Century, Edelweiss has been considered to be the symbol of fearless alpinists. Only the bravest were able to pick the flower that thrived in remote places. The Edelweiss represents attributes like courage, loyalty and community. The fact that the plant grew on rocks hostile to life made it an epitome of love. Spirited lovers set off to find Edelweiss flowers to prove their courage and their eternal love to their beloved.

Edelweiss became the National Symbol of Austria. Until now, it can be found on Austria's commemorative and circulation coins.

It is no surprise that the song "Edelweiss" from the movie-musical "The Sound of Music", became the unofficial National Anthem, however, the song is even better known abroad than in Austria itself. In the musical, the song has the function of a protest by the freedom-loving Baron von Trapp against the Nazi seizure of power - "Edelweiss, Edelweiss, Bless my homeland forever".

In 1886, Edelweiss was the first plant in the entire world to be declared a protected species. The Edelweiss is one of the most famous, but endangered plants of the Alps. This botanic rarity, a symbol of mountains and untouched nature, is protected from picking by hikers in most areas.
