1158) Australia's Great Barrier Reef, Niue: A $100 (AUD) Pearl 1 Oz. Gold Proof Coin: Date/Year of issue - 2020:
This beautiful 1 Oz $100 (AUD) Gold Coin issued by Niue, celebrates one of the most spectacular natural wonders in the world - the Great Barrier Reef.
The coin has a genuine Saltwater Pearl as an insert and comes with a high relief in an elegant Presentation case.
The Great Barrier Reef:
The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching over 2,300 kilometres (or 1,400 miles) over an area of 344,400 sq. kilometres (approx.).
The Reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia. It is the world's biggest single structure made of living organisms and can be seen from outer space.
The reef's structure is composed of and built by billions of tiny organisms, known as coral polyps and supports a wide diversity of life.
Environmental Threats:
A large part of the Reef is protected by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which helps to limit the impact of human threats, in the nature of fishing and tourism et al. Other environmental pressures on the Reef and its eco-system include - runoff, climate change, accompanied by mass coral bleaching, dumping of dredging sludge and cyclic population outbreaks of the crown-of-thorns starfish.
According to a report published in 10/2012, since 1985, the Reef has lost more than half its coral cover.
A 03/2016, report has found that the coral bleaching is now more wide-spread and seriously affecting the Northern parts of the Reef due to warming ocean temperatures.
In 03/2017, the journal "Nature" published a paper showing that huge sections of an 800 - kilometre (or 500 miles) stretch in the Northern part had died during 2016, due to high water temperatures, on account of global warming.
The percentage of baby corals being born of the Reef has dropped drastically in 2018 and it seems that the Reef is in an early stage of a "huge natural selection event unfolding".
Many of the mature breeding adults died in the bleaching events of 2016-17, leading to low coral birth rates. The types of corals that reproduced have also changed, threatening to bring about a long-term reorganisation of the reef eco-system over a period of time.

The Gold Coin:
The Reverse of the $100 (AUD) Gold Proof Gold Coin features the exotic and detailed images of some sea species that are found in the Great Barrier Reef.
Many of the diverse species that inhabit the Great Barrier Reef are depicted on this face in vibrant colour, including the orange clownfish, neon damselfish, copper-band butterflyfish, sea sponges and the coral that makes up the reef itself. Even more are depicted through meticulously detailed engraving, including starfish and a giant clam. The giant clam has opened to reveal its precious treasure - a genuine, premium quality saltwater pearl, which adorns the surface of the Great Barrier Reef Gold Coin, enhancing an already beautiful underwater vignette.
The inscription on the upper right periphery is - "GREAT BARRIER REEF".
