2040) "Mulan - Woman Warrior", Niue Island: "Women Warriors Coin Series": The third Coin in the Coin Series issued by Mint of Poland recounts the fictional Folk Tale: Year of Coin issue: 2021:
Mulan is based on a fictional folk tale originally (from the 4th to 6th Century AD), based in the Northern and Southern Dynasties, long before the 15th-century retelling made popular today.
The story originated in the Ballad of Mulan, which was a song recounting the journey of Mulan, a warrior who fought in place of her father. It was probably not based on anything factual, but was a story/song sung to children.
In 1593, playwright Xu Wei dramatized the Ballad of Mulan into a stage adaptation called, “The Female Mulan,” and the longer narrative grew more popular.
Even before the 1998 version of Mulan (the movie), there were actually a handful of other film adaptations released. The story of Mulan has been retold and remade for over 15 centuries now.
The Tale:
Mulan is a tale set in 15th-century China, following a young warrior on the verge of protecting the empire. One thing stands in the way - the warrior is Mulan (Yifei), a woman set to marry, instead of preparing for battle.
Hearing that her aging father, Hua Zhou (Tzi Ma), will be sent to serve, Mulan ties up her hair and dresses in the male uniform. Although her father had been called up to fight, but he had no son to go in his place, as such, she took on the role herself.
In the original tale, Mulan fought for over a decade in the Imperial Army, and did so with honour and distinction.
At the end of her service, the Emperor offered her many rewards, but she asked only for a horse, so that she could go home to her family. She arrived home and changed into her proper clothes. When she came outside she astonished her fellow soldiers who had no idea of her true nature.
The Movies on Mulan:
Two movies have been released on Mulan's story - 1998 & 2020. We have seen the 2020 Version on Hotstar "Disney".
The 2020, movie nearly has the same plot original 1998 Mulan film, an animated Disney classic that’s known for its spunky red dragon Mushu (Eddie Murphy), action-packed musical numbers, and an epic love story.
The new movie cuts most of those subplots though, subbing in impressive fight choreography and martial arts pros to tell the story of Mulan.
