The Royal Australian Mint (RAM) has issued a new Silver Proof Coin with a captivating design that blends luminous colour with Aboriginal Art depicting the story of the "Emu in the Sky" Constellation, which also kick-starts a new Coin Series titled "Star Dreaming".

The majesty and wonder of the "Emu in the Sky" Constellation is captured in the art of Wiradjuri artist Scott Towney. The Constellation is a silhouette traced by the dark spaces in the Milky Way.
The indigenous Australians were the first astronomers who have been using the stars as navigation maps, calendars and telling stories for tens of thousands of years.
One of these tales handed down for generations is that of the "Emu in the Sky" - a well-known aboriginal astronomical Constellation which is actually outlined by dark areas of the night sly, not the stars.
The Kamilaroi and Euahlayi people are an Australian Aboriginal cultural grouping located in the North and North-west of New South Wales, and like most Aboriginal stories, those collected are often used to describe physical objects in the sky.
As Aboriginal culture is oral in nature, oral transmission of knowledge is extremely important.
Viewing/Spotting the Emu in the Sky Constellation:
The "Emu in the Sky" can be seen only on a very dark and clear night sky. A moonless night will also increase the natural spectacle.
One must locate the Southern Cross Constellation above the Southern horizon. Two bright stars directly above due South are the "Pointers" to the Southern Cross. On the left-hand side of the Southern Cross, and on a clear night, a dark oval shape can be seen called the - Coalsack Nebula.
This is recognised as the head of the Emu, with its beak pointing downward. The long neck stretches to the left through the middle of the "Pointers" and the body and legs of the Emu stretch halfway across the horizon towards the East.While the head and neck of the Emu can be seen in the sky as early as March, it reaches its first appearance in full length after sunset in April and May, when it is seen stretching from the South to the southeast.
Mid-June is the best for viewing the Constellation, with the optimum viewing happening in the State of New South Wales.

On the Reverse of the $1 (One Dollar) Silver Proof Coin is seen the Constellation depicted in full colour. Under the Constellation is depicted a detailed image of an Emu and her nest, along with a clutch of eggs.Next to the nesting Emu are three young Aboriginal men posing and narrating the story of the "Emu in the Sky" with gestures.
The inscriptions on this face of the coin are - "THE EMU IN THE SKY", "1/2 Oz" and ".999 Ag".
On the Obverse of the $1 (One Dollar) Silver Proof Coin is seen an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, facing right, designed by Jody Clark (whose initials "JC" appear on the Queen's neck).
The peripheral inscriptions are - "ELIZABETH II. AUSTRALIA. 2020. 1 DOLLAR".
