1198)  "Gold Rush 1851", Australia: Gold (10 Dollars), Silver (1 Dollar) and Aluminium Bronze (1 Dollar) Coins minted by the Royal Australian Mint commemorate the "Era of Australia's Gold Rush: Date/Year of Coin issue: 2020:

The Royal Australian Mint has issued new Collector Coins which commemorate the era of Australia's famed Gold Rush, first discovered in 1951.

New South Wales was the scene of Australia's initial discovery of large deposits of gold, when Edward Hammond Hargraves (1861-1891), a gold prospector, claimed to have found gold in Australia in 1851, effectively starting an Australian gold rush.

The discovery of gold in Australia, set off a wild chain of events that ultimately led to modern day Australia.

Before the end of 1851, the gold rush spread to many other parts of New South Wales, where gold had been found, not just to the West, but also, to the South and North of Sydney. When the Gold prospecting began in Ballarat (then a small town in Victoria), diggers discovered that it was a prosperous goldfield. On a single day, five men uncovered a staggering 136.0 ounces of gold.

The settlement of Mount Alexander was even richer than Ballarat, as it was found that gold was "sitting" just under the surface, the shallowness allowing diggers to unearth huge gold nuggets easily. In just seven months, 2.4 million pounds of gold was transported from Mount Alexander to nearby capital cities.

Ultimately, the gold rushes caused a massive influx of people coming into Australia from across the globe. Between 1852 and 1860, 290,000 persons alone migrated to Victoria from the British Isles, with 15,000 coming from other European countries, and 18,000 migrated from the USA, where there was a similar gold rush in California in 1849.

The Australian Gold Rushes went on to fundamentally change the convict colonies into more progressive cities with the influx of free immigrants

A crucial import to Australia due to the Gold Rush was that of camels which quickly adapted to the Australian outback and were ideal for the transport of provisions. The remote desert landscapes of Western Australia needed supplies and the Camels were best suited for the work. Camels were imported into Australia by Afghan cameleers and proved their worth to Western Australia's gold industry.

One of the most dramatic discoveries of that period was the "Welcome Stranger" - a huge gold nugget weighing around 70.0 kilograms, discovered near Moliagul in Victoria in 1869.

The Reverse of an encapsulated Proof Silver  Coin is seen in the above image housed in an elegant Presentation Case, together with the Certificate of Authenticity (COA), placed alongside the cardboard box depicting a caricature of a Gold miner hugging a huge man-sized gold nugget, which he has recently unearthed. His tools (spades) for the digging, stand behind him.

Present Day

Presently, Australian gold production amounts to around 300.0 Troy Tonnes of gold every year and Australia is the second largest producer of gold across the globe.

The Commemorative Coin:

The thrilling discoveries of the Gold Rush are celebrated in this 2020 issue of Gold (10 Australian Dollars), Silver (1 Australian Dollar) and Aluminium Bronze (1 Australian Dollar), with the Reverse Designs being identical to all the three variants:

The Reverse of the Proof Silver 1 Dollar Coin. It has gold plating on the nugget to highlight the design

The Reverse of the Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) Aluminium Bronze 1 Dollar Coin

The Reverse design includes a detailed depiction of what might have been a typical gold nugget discovered in one of the many sites of gold discoveries during the gold prospecting. Additional elements on this face include a pan used for panning for gold in streams and the inscription "EUREKA" - a word which was commonly used to exclaim the discovery of gold by the miners & is inscribed "AUSTRALIA'S GOLD RUSH" (on the upper right half).

The silver variant includes gold plating on the nugget to highlight the design.
