About the Ugala Theatre:
In 01/2020, Estonia is celebrating the Centenary of one of the country's oldest professional theatres - Ugala.
In 01/1920, The Ugala Theatre was first established as a semi-professional company in Viljandi. The "Ugala's birth date can be considered to be 05.01.1920, when legally unincorporated theatre and art society by the same name presented a Mart Mord-directed performance of "Pansion Scholler", a farce written by Wilhelm Jacoby and Carl Laufs, at the Koidu community centre.
In 1926, it became fully professional.
In 1981, the theatre got a new and spacious theatre building, the most modern in the country at that time, that was one of the most advanced ones in the Baltic countries of its time.
In 2007, Viljandi Drama theatre became a Foundation - "SA Ugala Theate".
Since 2014, the artistic director of Ugala Theatre is an actor, playwright and director Ott Aardam and the managing director is Kristiina Alliksaar.
Since then, many of Estonian leading directors have staged guest productions here. The building has a 500-seat auditorium and a 160-seat small stage.
Several new productions are presented every season. The annual number pf performances in the theatre and other places in Estonia numbers over 250.
The theatre frequently collaborates with the theatre department of Tartu University Viljandi Cultural Academy.
In the past decade, many students have had the opportunity to take part in the performance. The repertoire of the theatre consists of works of both contemporary and classical playwrights from Estonia and around the Globe. The theatre also has a mission to bring out plays for children and youth.
