1284) "Kakariki" - (Parakeets), New Zealand : A set of five Stamps issued by New Zealand Post featuring Parakeets found in New Zealand: Date of Stamp issue: 04.03.2020:

In "te reo Maori" (the indigenous language of Aotearoa, New Zealand), Kakariki is the term used to describe the small parakeets found on the mainland and surrounding islands. All species and sub-species of New Zealand Parakeet share the characteristics of green plumage, and "Kakariki" also serves as the word for this colour.

The Banner is titled "KAKARIKI, NEW ZEALAND PARAKEETS" and shows the five stamps issued in the set

The Five Stamps on Kakariki Parakeets issued in the set

"Kakariki" are small moss-green-coloured parrots with a few blue flight feathers and long tails. Each species is diagnostically different, often with bright red or yellow feathering on the forehead and crown, near the eye and on the side of the rump. Like many of New Zealand's native birds, they are threatened by introduced mammalian predators.

The five varieties featured in this stamp set include -

Yellow-crowned Parakeet (or "Cyanoramphus auriceps") - $1.30 Stamp:

By feeding mainly on invertebrates, flowers and seeds in the canopy of beech and podocarp forests and by nesting high up in trees, the Yellow-crowned Parakeet has been more resistant to the threat of mammalian predators than other species.

Orange-fronted Parakeet (or "Cyanoramphus malherbi") - $1.30 Stamp:

Because they feed on invertebrates, flowers and seeds in the lower levels of the forest, the Orange-fronted Parakeet are very vulnerable to predators and remain one of New Zealand's most threatened species.

Red-crowned Parakeet (or "Cyanoramphus novazelandiae") - $2.60 Stamp:

The Red-crowned Parakeets have largely disappeared from the New Zealand mainland, but flourish on many islands from the sub-tropical Kermadec Islands to the sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands, and many off-shore islands of Aotearoa.

Forbes' Parakeet (or "Cyanoramphus forbesi") - $3.30 Stamp:

In the distant past, the ancestors of the Yellow-crowned Parakeets reached the Chatham Islands and slowly changed sufficiently to be recognised as a distinct species.

Antipodes Islands Parakeet ("Cyanoramphus unicolor") - $4.00 Stamp:

Although they can fly, the Antipodes Islands Parakeets prefer to walk and climb through the vegetation. Unusually, they feed on fat from sea-bird carcasses, on broken eggs and can occasionally kill small sea-birds.

The Miniature Sheet (MS) showcases a striking Red-crowned Parakeet.

The First Day Cover (FDC) is titled "KAKARIKI NEW ZEALAND PARAKEETS".

At top right are affixed the five stamps issued in the set. The Special Cancellation Handstamp shows a Parakeet at top left and is dated -"04.03.2020."

This First Day Cover (FDC) is titled "KAKARIKI PARAKEETS NEW ZEALAND" and bears a Cancelled Mini Sheet of the five stamps issued in the set.

At right it captures an Antipodes Island Parakeet nibbling on a spear of grass, which is an item on its varied diet.

The Presentation Pack (PP) gives a detailed description of Parakeets and the Birds covered in this Stamp Set by Dr. Hugh Robertson, from the Ornithological Society of New Zealand (Birds New Zealand) and co-author of The Field Guide to the Birds of New Zealand and the Hand Guide to the Birds of New Zealand.
