Raffaello, son of Giovanni Santi and scholar of the Perugino, was a painter and architect. He had a precocious talent and he acknowledged embodying the supreme ideal of serenity and beauty of the Renaissance.
It would be difficult to think of a name in the whole realm of pictorial art that would evoke more instantly pleasant recollections in the mind of the ordinary man or woman than that of the great Umbrian painter, Raphael, who was born at Umbrio on 06.04.1483.
His father Giovanni Santi was also a painter and an accomplished poet, who was engaged at the court of Guidobaldo, Duke of Urbino. The young Raphael inherited his rare good looks from his mother Magia Ciarla, a woman of great beauty, who was the inspiration for many of his famous Madonnas.
Both his parents died, when he was still a lad, but even at this early age, no doubt from the influence of his father, he had decided upon his career.
In 1508, at the age of twenty-five, Raphael was called to Rome by Pope Julius II, there to meet his great rival - Michelangelo. Raphael had the advantage over the gruff, brusque Michelangelo and soon became the fivourite of their patron, with honours being showered on him.
Raphael, now rich and powerful, even contempleted a marriage with the niece of Cardinal Bibbiena, but while painting "The Transfiguration", now in St. Peter's, he caught malaria and died on 06.04.1520, at the age of thirty-seven. The painting was finished later by Guilio Romano
The Commemorative Coin:
The Reverse of the Two Euro Bimetallic Coin is dedicated to the 500th Anniversary of Raffaello's passing away and depicts the profile of the virgin, a detail from the fresco "Madonna di Casa Santi", which is the first masterpiece of the young Raffello and is located in his family house in Urbino (currently seat of the eminent Accademia Raffaello).
