1274) William Wordsworth (1770-1850), United Kingdom's "Most Popular Poet": Commemorating the 250th Birth Anniversary with Gold, Silver and Cupro-nickel Coins from the Royal Mint, UK: Date of Coin issue: 09.03.2020:

The Royal Mint, UK has brought out commemorative Gold, Silver and Cupro-nickel Coins celebrating the 250th Birth Anniversary of one of the country's most beloved poets and regarded the world over as one of the greatest authors to have ever written in the English language - William Wordsworth (1770-1850).

The Reverse of the 5 Pounds Silver Coin is placed here against a background of thunderclouds on a barren mountainous region, symbolising the Napoleonic Wars that had overtaken Europe during Wordsworth's lifetime

Wordsworth is credited with beginning the English Romantic period in literature. His collaboration with Samuel Taylor Coleridge - "Lyrical Ballads" - published in 1798, is considered to be a stylistically ground-breaking collection of poems. While Wordsworth's romantic epic - "The Prelude" - is regarded as one of the greatest works in English Literature. Wordsworth's love of nature was expressed in his poetry which was published during the Napoleonic Wars - which was a dark and despondent time. The conflict had destroyed lives, buildings and brought massive upheavals in the lands it affected

Through the turmoil, Wordsworth shone a light on the natural world and celebrated the landscape in all its glory. He was one of the first writers to draw people's attention to nature and its raw beauty.

As part of the national celebrations, marking the 250th Birth Anniversary of Wordsworth, an authentic restoration of his Lake District home has been undertaken, which is being co-ordinated with a year-long calendar of activities to encourage a greater appreciation of his work than ever before.

The official reopening of Dove Cottage is scheduled for 07.04.2020, the actual anniversary of his birth, followed by a reopening of the Museum in early autumn. The transformation will mark a greater visitor experience across the hamlet of Town End, home to Dove Cottage.

The Commemorative Coins:

The release of these commemorative coins highlight Wordsworth's work, to a world-wide audience of his fans and poetry lovers in general, during this special year:

The Reverse of the Five Pounds Coins features lines taken from Wordsworth's celebrated poem - "Lines Written a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey" - weaving them into a design showcasing the magnificent scenery that inspired him.

The inscription on this face reads - "Nature never did betray the heart that loved her" - with the text "1770 WILLIAM WORDSWORTH 1850" (on the upper periphery).

The Obverse of the Five Pounds Coins features an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, designed by Jody Clark, whose initials "J.C." appear below the Queen's neck.

The peripheral inscriptions read - "ELIZABETH II. D.G. REG. F.D. 5 POUNDS. 2020" (meaning "By the Grace of God Queen, Defender of the Faith").

On the Gold and Silver Coins, there is an edge inscription, which reads - "IWANDERED LONELY AS A CLOUD."
