1237) 200th Anniversary of Royal Astronomical Society, United Kingdom (1820-2020): "Visions of the Universe", which include a combo of eight stamps exhibiting contributions to Astronomy made by the RAS and  a 50 Pence Coin depicting a Black Hole, with a special commentary on Prof. Stephen Hawking's contributions to Astronomy & a 24 page Prestige Stamp Booklet: Stamp set issue date: 11.02.2020:

The Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) was founded in 03/1820 and is the leading society for astronomy in the UK, promoting the scientific study of astronomy, the solar system and related geophysics. It supports public education for students, teachers, the public and media.

In 1985, Stephen Hawking was awarded the RAS's prestigious gold medal for his contribution to cosmology and his collaborations on the nature of black holes. He has been commemorated in a special Coin Cover that includes a Coin specially struck by the Royal Mint, UK.

The Commemorative Stamps:

In the year 2020,  in which the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS), United Kingdom is celebrating its 200th Anniversary, the Royal Mail has brought out a set of eight special stamps depicting various astronomical features and phenomena discovered over time by British astronomers and astrophysicists.

This stamp set presents stunning images depicting astronomical features and phenomena studied by British astronomers over the centuries. This stamp set explores and celebrates the mystery and majesty of our Universe.

The First Day Cover (FDC) with the Coin Insert shows at right a photograph of Late Prof. Stephen Hawking after whom the FDC is titled.

The Eight Stamps issued in the set are affixed at top right. The Special Cancellation Handstamp/Postmark shows a Black Hole in the centre and  is of Cambridge Post Office and is dated - "11.02.2020".

Cambridge has been selected as the location, in recognition of Professor Hawking's career-long connection to this city. His life, work and contributions to cosmology that forged his reputation as one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists since Albert Einstein.

The limited edition Coin Cover (7,000 Brilliant Uncirculated pieces and 250 Silver Proof pieces, commemorates Professor Stephen Hawking's lifelong commitment to enhancing our understanding of the origins and secrets of the universe.

The Special Handstamp/Postmark with which the 8-stamp set is cancelled. The special postmark features an illustration of a black hole and Cambridge as the location in recognition of Professor Hawking's career-long association to the city.

The Commemorative Coin, which is included in the Combo Cover of Stamps and Coin

The Reverse of the 50 Pence Coin shows a Black Hole towards the bottom periphery and shows Hawking's Black Hole equation towards the upper periphery, below which is inscribed - "STEPHEN HAWKING".

The Obverse of the 50 Pence Coin shows an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right designed by Jody Clark, whose initials "JC" appear below the Queen's neck. The peripheral inscriptions are - " 50 PENCE. 2019. ELIZABETH II. D.G. REG. F.D. (meaning "Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith").

The Front of the Coin Cover Insert is titled "PROFESSOR STEPHEN HAWKINS" and shows the coin within a colourful Black Hole. The description at right reads -

"Professor Stephen Hawking is widely regarded as one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists since Albert Einstein. Despite living with a motor neurone disease for more than 50 years, he contributed immensely to science through his research, lectures, books, the biological film "The Theory of Everything" and numerous public and charitable appearances.

He was made a CBE in 1982 and a Companion of Honour in 1989 and was granted the US Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009. He also received 13 honorary degrees. Known for his warmth and humour, Hawking was a devoted father and grandfather. He has left a rich and inspiring legacy."

The Inner Page of the Coin Cover Insert reads -

"REMEMBER TO LOOK UP AT THESTARS, AND NOT DOWN AT YOUR FEET. TRY TO MAKE SENSE OF WHAT YOU SEE, AND WONDER ABOUT WHAT MAKES THE UNIVERSE EXIST. BE CURIOUS!" - STEPHEN HAWKING.

1942 - BORN IN OXFORD ON 8 JANUARY:

"Stephen Hawking and his two younger sisters, had a happy childhood mostly spent in Highgate, London and then in St. Albans in  Hertfordshire. Hawking  remembered that he was never more than 'halfway up the class' at school. He did, however, speculate on the origin of the universe and whether God created it".

1962 - GRADUATES WITH A FIRST FROM OXFORD:

"Entering University college, Oxford at the age of 17, Hawking studied Natural Sciences, specialising in Physics. His examination mark was borderline, and Hawking said that if he received a First he would go to Cambridge, but if he got an Upper second, he would stay at Oxford. They gave him a First. This allowed him to apply to Cambridge to research cosmology and general relativity."

1963 - DIAGNOSED WITH MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE:

"Shortly after Hawking's 21st birthday, hospital tests showed that he had motor neurone disease. He was given, mistakenly as it turned out, two years to live. Two things helped him - Wagner's music and Jane Wilde, who would become his wife. Heworked tirelessly, submitted his PhD thesis - "Properties of Expanding Universes", and applied to Gorwile and Caius College at Cambridge to become a Research Fellow. He remained a Fellow ther for the rest of his life.

1966 - APPLIES HIS IDEAS ON GENERAL RELATIVITY TO THE STUDY OF THE BIG BANG:

As part of his work on  singularities and the Theory of General Relativity, Hawking won the Adams Prize for his essay "Singularities and the Geometry of Space-Time". With Roger Penrose from Birkbeck College, London, Hawking found a singularity theorem showing how the universe had a definite beginning in the Big Bang. This work gained them recognition and is now believed to be the correct description of how the universe began."

1970 - BLACK HOLE DISCOVERIES:

Hawking's research on singularities led to his interest in black holes and resulted in him finding that when two black ho0les collide and merge, the area of the final black hole is greater than the sum of the areas of the originals. This discovery revealed fundamental properties of the universe. As Hawking noted "I was writing the rulebook for black holes."

1974 - HAWKING RADIATION:

"To his disbelief, Hawking showed that particles could escape from a black hole event horizon - a revolutionary quantum effect. This breakthrough discovery is known as Hawking radiation, and it unifies general relativity with quantum theory - the large with the small. Also, in 1974, Hawking was elected  to the Royal Society at the age of only 32, and the following year he received the Gold Medal for Science from Pope Paul VI."

1979 - AWARDS AND APPOINTMENTS:

"Hawking was appointed Professor of Mathematics in the University of Cambridge, a position he held for 30 years. Previously held by Isaac Newton in 1669, this professorship was awarded to Hawking's groundbreaking scientific work on black holes. In addition, Hawking was given the first albert Einstein Medal for his "scientific findings, works or publications related to Albert Einstein". Three years later he was made a CBE."

1985 - HEALTH CRISIS AND CONTINUING WORK:

During a working trip to CERN in Switzerland, Hawking became ill and had a tracheostomy, which left him unable to speak. Working closely with computer developers, he helped develop a communication system and voice synthesiser, with its famous android American accent. Hawking's "voice" became his trademark and is now recognised worldwide. During this period, Hawking began work on "A Brief History of Time", the book that would surprise everyone."

1988 - "A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME" PUBLISHED:

"Aiming to share the "excitement of science", "A Brief History of Time" became Hawking's most well-known book. It translates complicated scientific theories about the universe into (mostly) everyday language. It was published in over 40 countries, remained on the UK bestseller lists for over four years and has sold over 20 million copies worldwide."

1993 - A PUBLISHING PHENOMENON:

"In 1991, Hawking published "Black Holes and Baby Universes", exploring how the universe may be governed, followed by "Universe: The Cosmos Explained" (1993), "The Universe in a Nutshell" (2001), "On the Shoulders of Giants" (2002), "The Theory of Everything: The Origin and Fate of the Universe" (2002). Hawking co-authored a successful series of children's science books with his daughter Lucy.

2004 - SOLVING THE PARADOX:

"In a sensational scientific U-turn, Hawking announced that he had solved the black hole information paradox, which had long been troubling many scientists. Hawking proposed that, contrary to earlier theories, black holes do not destroy all that is sucked into them and that information can be retrieved. The debate on this topic continues decades after Hawking's pioneering discovery, a tribute to his continuing influence."

2007 - HEADING INTO SPACE:

"Hawking undertook a zero-gravity flight in a Boeing 727 jet in April. A keen advocate of the need for space exploration, he remained in the air for two hours and underwent eight dives that allowed him to experience weightlessness and to be freed from the restrictions of his wheelchair. He said afterwards "I want to encourage public interest in space." Hawking had been invited by Richard Branson to travel on Branson's first space flight. He accepted immediately."

2009 - A PARTY FOR TIME TRAVELLERS:

"Hawking's popularity as "the public's scientist" was further established when he invited time travellers to a party. But he did not send out the invitations until after the party was over. That way, only those who could genuinely travel back in time would know about it and be able to attend, but no one came. And that was the point: "I have experimental evidence that time travel is not possible", he said afterwards."

The Back of the Coin Cover Insert reads -

"2012 - OPENS THE LONDON 2012 PARALYMPIC GAMES:

In a glittering opening ceremony, Hawking announced the start of the Paralympics in London's Docklands, "promising an evening of exploration" and exhorting the 62,000 spectators to "look up at the stars". During the funfest of achievement and splendidly choreographed displays by Paralympic athletes, Hawking received loud applause when he said, "However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. Good luck to you all."

2013 - WINS THE BREAKTHROUGH PRIZE IN FUNDAMENTAL PHYSICS:

"This special prize was awarded to Hawking for his "discovery of Hawking radiation from black holes, and his deep contributions to quantum gravity and quantum aspects of the early universe".

This was especially pleasing for Hawking, as it validated his lifelong discoveries without the need for experimental confirmation, which, in this case, would be difficult to achieve."

2014 - THE FILM OF HAWKING'S LIFE:

"The Theory of Everything" was based on the personal memoir of Hawking's wife Jane. Actor Eddie Redmayne won an Oscar for his performance capturing not only Hawking's declining health, but, more importantly, his wit, determination, stubbornness and single-minded pursuit of cosmological knowledge.

Overall, both Hawking and his wife were pleased with the film, and its huge success brought Hawking's character and academic discoveries to a much wider public."

2018 - DIES IN CAMBRIDGE, AGED 76:

Stephen Hawking died peacefully in his sleep on 14 March 2018, at home in Cambridge. At the memorial service in June in Westminster Abbey, where Hawking's ashes were interred next to those of Newton and Darwin, colleagues from around the world paid tribute to Hawking's scientific legacy. But there was also much emphasis on Hawking's family, his humanity, his humour and his charitable works. Hawking's words, set to music by Vangelis were beamed by the European Space Agency to our closest black hole.
