The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) has brought out its second Silver Collector Coin which marks the 350th Anniversary of one of Canada's oldest and historic commercial operations the "Hudson's Bay Company", under its "Moments To Hold Coin Series". The third and fourth coins are scheduled to be issued in October 2020  and December 2020 respectively.

The four coins included in the Coin Series mark important subjects that are the fabric of Canada

The first coin in this year long Coin Series celebrated "100 years of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)". A link to my post on the RCMP can be visited at the following link:

About the Hudson's Bay Company:

Incorporated in 1670, Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) is Canada's oldest company. Partnerships with First Nations, Inuit and Metis led to its success during the fur trade era.

As Canada began settling, HBC evolved along with it - its commercial pursuits were a crucial part of Canada's earlier industries and development, its trading posts became Canada's cities and towns and its fur trading empire evolved into the modern present day retail giant.

Signed by King Charles II on 02.05.1670, the Royal Charter which founded the Hudson's Bay Company has been preserved at HBC's corporate headquarters in Toronto.

The charter granted exclusive trading rights to the Governor and Company of Adventurers of England trading into Hudson Bay.

Prince Rupert of the Rhine (1619-1682), a nephew of King Charles II, was appointed the first Governor of the company by the King, who was his cousin.

Until 1970, the Royal Charter included a clause requiring HBC to pay the British Crown a periodic rent of "two Elks and two Black beavers". The Rent ceremony has only occurred four times since 1670 - in 1927, 1939, 1959 and 1970.

As the original entity has survived into a commercially successful endeavour, Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) is now Canada's oldest continuously trading company.

The Commemorative Silver Coin:

The Reverse of the 5 Dollars Silver Modified Specimen Coin was inspired by the Voyaguer dollar introduced in 1935 and designed by Emanuel Hahn.

The engraved image features six explorers paddling a canoe in rough waters after exchanging goods at Hudson's Bay Company trading post, which appears behind the pine trees in the distance.

The inscriptions are - "CANADA" (on the upper periphery) and "5 DOLLARS" "2020" on the lower periphery.

The Obverse of the 5 Dollars Silver Modified Specimen Coin shows an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right.

The peripheral inscriptions are - "ELIZABETH II. DG REGINA" (meaning "Elizabeth II, By the Grace of God Queen").

The specifications of this coin are:

Denomination: 5 Dollars; Metal Composition: .9999 Fineness Silver (Ag); Weight: 7.96 grams; Diameter/Size: 27.0 mm; Coin Quality: Modified Specimen; Edge: Serrated: Mint: Royal Canadian Mint; Reverse Designer: Trevor Tennant; Mintage: 100,000 pieces; Year: 2020.

Each Coin is presented in a colourful blister-pak type folder which includes narrative information in English and French, as well as, images on the history of the Hudson's Bay Company.
