The theme of the 2020-EUROPA stamp issues in "Ancient Postal Routes".
The Stamps from Estonia depict two historic stops on the old Tartu-Voru road.
One stamp of 1.90 Euro has a present day photo of the Varbuse Postal Station built on the side of this road in 1863, where the Estonian Road Museum has been located since 2001.
The second stamp depicts the Tille Tavern from the early 20th Century. This building was destroyed during the same period, thus present day travellers do not see it.
The First Day Cover (FDC) design, at left, portrays the Tartu-Vastseliina Road Map Sheet from the Tartu Country Road Atlas published in 1695, which is preserved in the National Archives.
The two stamps issued in the set are affixed at top right and have been cancelled with a special Handstamp/Postmark presenting a postman-traveller on the old postal route carrying his mail-bag. The date of cancellation is - "14.05.2020".
The two Stamp Sheets (SS) of 1.90 Euro of ten Stamps each.
On the selvage of the Stamp Sheet is an image of the traveller sculpture created by Mati Karmin, located at the Ihamaru crossroads.
About EUROPA Stamps:
EUROPA Postage Stamps (also known as EUROPA-CEPT - European Conference Postal and Telecommunication Administrations - until 1992) are special stamps issued by European Conference Postal Administrations/Enterprises and bear the official EUROPA logo, a PostEurop registered trademark under the aegis of PostEurop in which Europe is the central theme.
EUROPA Stamps underline cooperation in the posts domain, aimed at promotion of philately. They also build awareness of the common roots, culture and history of Europe and its common goals.
As such, EUROPA Stamps have been a tangible symbol of Europe's desire for closer cooperation and integration.
When CEPT decided to focus more on telecommunications in 1993, PostEurop took over the management of the EUROPA issues. The CEPT logo was replaced by a new logo created by PostEurop i.e. the word "EUROPA" leaning towards the right hand side.
The cooperating Postal Administrations/Enterprises in Europe have been issuing stamps with a common theme for that year for over 60 years.
Since 2002, a design competition has also been associated with this - the EUROPA Stamp Best Design Competition, in which the best design is chosen by a popular online voting. The competition is organised by PostEurop.
Each Year, PostEurop's Stamps and Philately Group selects the EUROPA Stamp theme. The themes since 1993 have been:
