The Legend:
Irawaru was married to Maui's younger sister - Hinauri. Irawaru was a great hunter and fisherman and as they shared similar interests, the brothers-in-law became very good friends. Everything Maui would prepare for their expeditions, Irawaru was able to copy, sometimes improving on the nets and traps they would use to hunt and gather food.
One day as Maui and Irawaru were preparing to go fishing together, Maui began fashioning his "Hiniki" (Eel pot) so that the fish he trapped would not be able to escape. Irawaru copied Maui's "Hiniki", but made his bigger and weaved an elaborate pattern to strengthen the trap.
Maui became jealous and soon became angry. He did not appreciate Irawaru trying to better him. As Irawaru was occupied with making his "Hiniki", he did not notice Maui standing over him reciting an incantation under his breath. By the time, he looked up it was too late - Maui's hands were glowing with energy/power. The light surrounded Irawaru, contorting his body until finally all that was left was a long-haired dog.
That night, Maui returned home without Irawaru. Hinauri knew right away that her trickster brother Maui had done something unspeakable to her husband. After much quarrelling, Maui told Hinauri what he had done.
Hinauri raced out into the night and found Irawaru howling to the Moon. The sight broke Hinauri's heart and inconsolable, she cast herself into the sea, never to be seen again.
The inscriptions are - "TEKAU TARA" (on the upper left periphery) and "TEN DOLLARS" (on the lower right periphery) on both the coins.
Both coins are embellished with unique Koru designs.

The Gold Coins are presented in a hand-made wooden box made of native New Zealand timber and inlaid with unique Maori Artwork. The Coins are accompanied with an individually numbered Certificate of Authenticity (COA).
The Reverse of First Coin $1 (One Dollar) Silver Coin is identical in design to the Gold Coin, except for the denomination - "ONE DOLLAR".
