Yesterday (04.09.2021), we visited Guy Goves for the first time in almost two years since the Wuhan virus pandemic (also known as Covid 19) broke out.

Guy showed me this vintage bottle of wine from the Chateau Mouton Rothschild carrying a 2003 label, but having a 23.07.1914 vintage signature on it.  The wine bottle was ordered by his friends in a restaurant. When the bill came for an exorbitant amount, everyone became curious as to what set this particular wine apart from the others.

Here is the interesting story of the wine:

The history of the Rothschilds:

The Rothschilds, a famous European family are well known for their prominent role in finance, wine and philanthropy.

In the 18th century, the founder of the dynasty Mayer Amschel Rothschild sent his sons the major capitals of Europe to create the business empire in various disciplines.

The property in the 18th Century, along with Lafite and Latour of the "prince of vines" - the Marquis Nicholas-Alexandre de Segur, then the Barons de Brane, Chateau Mouton Rothschild took its present name after it was acquired by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild from the English Branch of the famous dynasty in 1853.

For many years, despite the increasingly acknowledged quality of its wine, Mouton aroused little interest among its owners, unwilling to make the journey to a then neglected region.

In 1922, Baron Nathaniel's great grandson Baron Philippe de Rothschild, barely 20 years old, took in hand the destiny of an estate to which he devoted his entire life.

In 1981, she revealed to the public the original artworks, illustrating the First Growth labels in the form of a travelling exhibition - "Mouton Rothschild - Paintings for labels". The exhibition was recognised by around forty different museums. Since then the Mouton Rothschild wine bottles carry an exclusive painting label.

In 1988, Baron Philippe passed away leaving Baroness Philippine de Rothschild his only child, who shared her inheritance of the Wines with her three children - Camille, Philippe and Julien. She was a well-known actress, but she ended her stage career to continue her father's work, while resolutely bringing Mouton and the family business into the 21st Century.

150th Birthday Anniversary Tribute (1853-2003)

"The 2003 vintage marked the 150th Anniversary of Mouton's entry into the family to which the winery has since belonged without interruption for five generations.

Baroness Philippine de Rothschild decided to depart from tradition of carrying art labels on the wine bottles by devoting an entire label to Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild (1812-1870), her direct ancestor from the English branch of the family who acquired the Mouton Estate on 11.05.1853.

Baron Nathaniel is therefore, depicted on the label in a period photograph. The background shows part of the deed of sale. This document, carefully preserved in the Mouton archives, marks the beginning of a long love story between the Rothschild's and the great wines of Bordeaux."

(This wine was of 1914 vintage, presented with a 2003 celebratory label)

About the Wine:

Varietal Mix:

Cabernet Sauvignon,- 76%, Merlot - 14%, Cabernet Franc - 8%, Petit Verdot 2%.

Tasting Notes:

The wine has a beautifully intense, garnet hue and a highly refined nose, rather typical of Cabernet, on aromas of blackcurrant and cedarwood along with caramel and stewed fruit.

The attack is lush, the palate rich, on stylish, well-rounded tannins; fruit flavours rub shoulders with spice, Havana cigar and eucalyptus. The finish is very expressive, long and powerful, harmonious and silky.
