About Zhang Fei:

Zhang Fei is the second coin in the “Warriors of Ancient China” series, coming after the “Lu Bu” coin. It is dedicated to one of the most powerful warriors in ancient China – Zhang Fei.

Zhang Fei was a military general serving under the warlord Liu Bei in the late Eastern Han dynasty and early Three Kingdoms period of China.

Zhang Fei and Guan Yu, who were among the earliest to join Liu Bei, shared a brotherly relationship with their lord and accompanied him on most of his early campaigns.

Zhang Fei fought in various battles on Liu Bei's side, including the Red Cliffs campaign (208–209), takeover of Yi Province (212–214), the Yellow Turbans Uprising and Hanzhong Campaign (217–218). He was assassinated by his subordinates in 221 AD, after serving for only a few months in the state of Shu Han, which was founded by Liu Bei earlier that year.

Zhang Fei is one of the major characters in the 14th-century historical novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", which dramatises and romanticises the events before and during the Three Kingdoms period.

Zhang Fei was famous for being an exceedingly loyal and formidable warrior. He was faithful to his Warlord until his death. His weapon was called as a “1.8 Zhang long serpent spear” because its head was shaped like a serpent.

The Commemorative Coin:

The Reverse of the $5 (Five Dollars - NZD) Silver Coin depicts Zhang Fei on horseback with his "1.8 Zhang long serpent spear" ready to do battle against his adversaries. The Coin is titled "Zang Fei" (in both Chinese and English).

The Obverse of the $5 (Five Dollars - NZD) Silver Coin depicts an image of a coiled serpent ready to strike, symbolising Wang Zei's deadly weapon. Three swords symbolise that Zhang's weapon had the strike capacity of three weapons.

Also seen on this face is an inset image of Queen Elizabeth II facing right. The peripheral inscriptions are - "ELIZABETH II . NIUE. FIVE DOLLARS. 2020. 3 OZ. Ag 999".

The Presentation Case in which the Coin is housed. It is titled "ZHANG FEI", "WARRIORS OF ANCIENT CHINA".
