About Wonders Of The Modern World - Roman Colosseum:

The Colosseum in Rome features a new stamp dedicated to one of the most visited monuments in Italy.

Gladiator games, animal fights and even naval battles, are some of the shows that took place in this place.

Its real name is the Flavian Amphitheatre, but it is known as the Colosseum, perhaps, because of the “colossal” statue of Nero that stood nearby.

This place was the main entertainment of the people in Ancient Rome. More than 50,000 spectators could participate in the bloody diversions with which the emperors courted the people.

Its construction began under the power of the Emperor Vespasian about the year 71 AD and its inauguration took place in the year 80 under the reign of his son Titus.

Its radial structure was organized in five levels with areas delimited according to social class.

Until the 20th Century AD, no other building surpassed the Flavian Amphitheatre in capacity.

In 2007, following in the wake of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, of which only the Great Pyramid of Gizá still stands, those that are considered the Seven Wonders of the Modern World were chosen from dozens of monuments around the world. .

Among the 77 candidates, along with the Colosseum, the City of Petra, the Taj Mahal, Machu Picchu, the pyramid of Chichén Itza, the Great Wall of China and the statue of Christ the Redeemer of Rio de Janeiro were chosen, all of them has a dedicated stamp in previous years.
