1612) "Climate Change - Our Greatest Threat", British Antarctic Territory (BAT), a British Overseas Territory (BOT): A new 12 - sided One Pound Coin highlights the imminent threat : Coin minted by the Pobjoy Mint, UK: Coin issue date: 30.11.2020:
On 30.11.2020, the British Antarctic Territory (BAT) has issued new 2020-dated £1 coins, which is also the first British Overseas Territory (BOT) to incorporate the specifications of the United Kingdom’s new bi-metallic pound coin in their circulation coinage.
The Coin Album showcasing the Reverse of the 1 Pound Coin. On the Album Cover is mentioned the title of the Coin issue - "BRITISH ANTARCTIC TERRITORY 2020" and "CLIMATE CHANGE".
The Header/Banner depicts the Obverse and Reverse of the 1 Pound Coin against a background of a giant ice-berg melting and being washed away at sea.
The new 12-sided £1 coin from the British Antarctic Territory includes all the security features of the new UK £1 coins which were introduced into circulation in 2017. These bi-metallic coins have been struck with an outer nickel-brass golden colour and inner nickel-plated brass silver colour core and incorporate 12 sides as part of their new design.
About the Climate Change happening in the Antarctica:
Antarctica is the largest and most pristine wilderness on Earth, and due to the significance of the continent for science as a natural laboratory for undertaking research of global relevance, highlighting the effects of climate change and the threat to our world is a worthy subject for this exciting new release on behalf of the British Antarctic Territory.
Most human activities have some form of environmental impact and it is only by working together that we have any chance of preserving the environment for future generations. The Antarctic is a crucial part of the Earth's climate system and a sensitive barometer of environmental change.
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has for the past 60 years been responsible for most of the UK's scientific research in Antarctica and its current research strategy is focussing on improving our understanding of climate change.
Because the causes and effects of climate change are extremely complex, amalgamating all the pieces that make up the jigsaw of climate change is a huge challenge and it is by conducting world-class science in the Antarctic that the British Antarctic Survey is making a significant contribution to meeting this challenge.
Understanding how Antarctica is responding to climate change is essential if scientists are going to be able to predict future climate change impacts.
The Commemorative Coin:
The coins have been minted by the Pobjoy Mint, at their facilities in Surrey, England, on behalf of the treasury of the British Antarctic Territory.
The Reverse of the £1 Coins depicts a massive iceberg in the centre with the powerful message - "CLIMATE CHANGE – OUR GREATEST THREAT", placed above the main design, a timely message we all need to take notice of to ensure that the Earth is preserved for many more generations to come.
The denomination of "ONE POUND" is placed below the primary design.
This coin also incorporates new security features of the £1 coins including the micro-text around the whole of the perimeter or edge with the year 2020 repeated 12 times.
The Obverse of the One Pound Coin features an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, which is an exclusive design from the Pobjoy Mint.
The inscriptions - "BRITISH ANTARCTIC TERRITORY" and the year of issue, "2020", are placed on this face. Micro-text which reads "ONE POUND" can be read around the whole of the perimeter or edge and repeated 24 times.
A holograph which includes the pound sign £ is placed directly under the Queen’s effigy.

ReplyDelete"The British Antarctica Territory has no permanent residents. No shops or offices to use those coins. The British Antarctica Territory is not recognized as the British territory. I think Britain is using coins and postage stamps to bolster their claim to this territory."
That is absolutely correct. During summers the Antarctic Territory has a population of about 250 comprising scientific research teams from all over the world. Although a governor has been appointed by the UK and laws have been framed, they are all in suspended animation as UK has ratified a treaty in the 1960s with other countries to not enforce it's claim over this area. These coins are mostly collector coins and purchased as souvenirs by the scientists of the research teams or collectors around the globe. These coins have, therefore not been issued by the official Royal Mint, UK, but by the Pobjoy Mint, which is s private mint because of the above treaty.
