The enduring fascination:
If one listens to Pink
Floyd’s 15 studio albums sequentially, one gets an insight into the group’s
musical development and their popularity in the music culture of all time.
The band’s 1967 debut, “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn”, is
a perfect example of psychedelic adventure and whimsy, with topics ranging from
that era’s fascination with space travel (as on the titanic opener, “Astronomy Domine” to Syd
Barrett’s internalised nostalgia (evinced on the warm fantasia of “Matilda Mother”).
In
many aspects, it is a duality – the questing, bigger issues and the obliquely
personal ones – the lies at the core of Pink Floyd’s world view and their music.
If
“Piper” was defined by Syd Barrett’s personality, then his departure from the
group in March 1968, following increasing bouts of depression and mental
instability, proved traumatic.
Bolstered by the arrival
of guitarist David Gilmour – who initially joined to work as a fifth member of
the band alongside his former Cambridge Tech friend, Barrett – the founding
trio of bassist Roger Waters, drummer Nick Mason and keyboard player Richard
Wright struggled to fill the song-writing void left by Syd.
Out
of their uncertainty, however, came further experimentation,
the double album released in 1969 “Ummagumma”,
underlined this well, with the split between live performance (on Record
One) and studio recordings (Record Two), featuring tracks written
individually by all four band members.
The albums that followed
–“Atom Heart Mother” (1970), “Meddle” (1971) and “Obscured by Clouds” (1972) – saw
the band’s sound truly come into its own, paving the way for the all-conquering
“The Dark Side of the Moon”
(1973) .
I was in Class IX when the album “The Dark Side of the Moon” came
out. LPs ( or “Long Playing” Records as they were called then) cost a sum of
Rs.40/- in those days, when most of us were getting pocket money of Rs.10/- to
25/- a month (unimaginable sums of pocket money today), so a lot of my friends
contributed two to five rupees each and we managed to get hold of an album of
the “The Dark Side of the Moon”,
to listen to on my HMV 20-20 Stereo at full blast, under psychedelic lights,
which one of my class-mates had installed, which
is when I was introduced to the music of Pink Floyd and became an instant fan.
“The Dark Side of the Moon” was the eighth album by released
by Pink Floyd which was originally released on 01.03.1973 on the label
“Harvest”. This album built on the ideas explored in the band’s earlier
recordings and live shows, but was markedly different in its approach from the
instrumental thematic by Syd Barrett one of the group’s founder members.
This
album explored themes including conflict, consumerism greed, passage of time
and mental illness (partially inspired from Barrett’s deteriorating mental
state). Some of the most advanced recording techniques of the time including
“multi-track recording, tape loops and Analogie synthesizers were used. The
album is notable for its use of “Musique concrete” (meaning “concrete music”)
and conceptual, philosophical lyrics, which is the hallmark of the band’s other
work.
The successor to this
album – “Wish You Were Here”
(1975) is no less majestic and is again influenced by Syd’s absence.
Pink
Floyd’s sweeping art rock and cerebral lyricism chimed with an audience
increasingly disenchanted with the failed optimism of the 1960s.
Indeed, disillusionment
also pervades Pink Floyd’s album “Animals
(released in 1977), which set the tone for the conceptual brutality of
“The Wall” (1979) and its
successor, “The Final Cut”
(1983).
Following Roger Walter’s
departure in the mid-1980s, Pink Floyd went on to issue two more records under
David Gilmour’s leadership – “A
Momentary Lapse of Reason” (1987) and “The Division Bell” (1994).
Two
decades later, a few years after the passing away of Richard Wright on
15.09.2008, came the band’s swan song “The Endless River”, which is a
contemplative record, brought to a close the career of band whose work has been
immersive and whose music continues to astound and inspire, no matter which of
their album one listens to first.

The individual stamps:
“THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF
DAWN” (EMI Columbia, 1967) Pink Floyd’s psychedelic debut is named after Chapter
7 of Kenneth Grahame’s classic children’s novel, “the Wind in the Willows”, one
of the front-man Syd Barrett’s favourite books. The image on the stamp is of the album cover, with the album disc partially pulled out of the cover
“ATOM HEART MOTHER”
(Harvest, 1970). Pink Floyd’s fifth album provided them with their first UK
Number One. It was also the first of their LPs not to feature the band’s name
on the front of the sleeve, thus setting the tone/trend for subsequent albums
“THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON”
(Harvest, 1973). With sales in excess of 50 million copies worldwide, “Dark
Side” remains in the Billboard chart in America over 40 years after its release
and has been entered into the Guinness Book of Records as the longest-charting
album
“WISH YOU WERE HERE”
(Harvest, 1975). Legendary jazz violinist Stephene Grappelli was invited to
play on the album’s title track. His violin is inaudible on the song and he was
uncredited on the album sleeve but paid for his services
ANIMALS (Harvest/EMI,
1977). ANIMALS was released as punk raged. While Johnny Rotten wore a T-shirt
with the slogan “I hate Pink Floyd”, Nick Mason busied himself producing “The
Damned’s Music for Pleasure”
THE ENDLESS RIVER
(Parlophone, 2014). Ostensibly a tribute to the late Richard Wright and
described as a “headphones” album by David Gilmour, “THE ENDLESS RIVER” beat
all records in the volume of online pre-orders.

Pink
Floyd Art:
The graphic design pair of
Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell, who formed a design company they named
“Hipgnosis” were friends of Pink Floyd back in Cambridge and began contributing
to their visuals in 1968, working on the art-work to their second album, “A
Saucerful of Secrets”. If their creation of the prism that graces “The Dark
Side of the Moon” is an iconic moment of understatement, then it is an
exception to the rule.
In fact, these two
designers liked nothing more than to create monumental pieces of work, along
with packaging that even today remains outlandish. While their work with Pink
Floyd echoed the band’s thematic and musical developments, their contribution
to rock’s iconography as a whole remains “sans
pareil”.
For example, for the cover
of the 1994 album “THE DIVISION BELL”, Storm Thorgerson came up with many
different visual ideas before settling on the concept of two heads coming
together as one (as shown in an early sketch.
The heads were then constructed
on a large scale in both stone and metal, installed in a field near ELY and
photographed.
The final iconic image
This
was a time for sonic experimentation:
The Beatles were the first
to experiment in the studio by creating a world of their own. In the summer of
1967, both bands –The Beatles and Pink Floyd – recorded together at London’s Abbey Road.
Even when the Beatles
stopped recording together around 1970, Pink
Floyd took this concept even further and they sculpted their studio sound for
the next four decades, the innovation they witnessed that summer, working with
The Beatles, providing eternal inspiration.
The
Azimuth Co-ordinator:
Pink Floyd’s sonic
adventurism was typified by their attempts to pioneer the concept of
“surround sound” during their “Games for May” show at London’s Queen
Elizabeth Hall on 12.05.1967.
Deploying speakers in the
four corners of the auditorium, Richard Wright controlled the sound from the
stage using the Azimuth Co-ordinator, a joystick device designed to Floyd’s
specification by EMI technical engineer Bernard Speight. This fanciful machine remained a part of the band’s live show for
years.
Some
legendary live performances:
While their work in the
studio had always been all-important, Pink Floyd have been constantly defined
by their live performances. Their early shows in 1966, at London’s UFO Club
married the use of pioneering liquid light effects that matched the psychedelic
Sturm und Drang (meaning “Storm and
Stress”) of the music itself.
“The Dark Side of the Moon” Tour began in 1972 in the
UK, prior to the release of the album in March the following year. Numerous
dates in Asia, North America and Europe followed.
By 1973, the band’s
stage set was further expanded to mirror the dramatic sensibilities of the
music: the tension that pervades “The
Dark Side of the Moon” was reflected by lighting director Arthur Max’s
innovative work, which included a 15
foot model plane flying over the audience, crashing on stage in sync with the
explosion during the track “On the Run”.
The “In The Flesh”
Tour (aka “the Animals Tour”) of 1977 continued that pattern of
spectacle through the use of inflatables (pigs included), and saw Pink Floyd
make US stadiums their own.
The theatrical elements
would escalate further, most specifically during the staging of “The Wall” from February 1980
to June 1981. With the album’s central premise based around Water’s ideal
of alienation between band and audience (not to mention a wider view of “self” versus “state”), the band’s show saw the building of a physical
wall during the performance itself. Staging costs were exorbitant and
technology was still in its infancy, leading to a problematic tour that lasted
only 31 shows – meagre by today’s standards.
The cost of staging “The Wall” Tour was estimated at
$1.5 million prior to the show hitting the road. The stage set was designed by
Mark Fisher who had worked at Pink Floyd’s “Animals” Tour and involved 420
“bricks”.
On 5th July
1989, as part of the gargantuan “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” Tour, Pink
Floyd played a logistically challenging but spectacular show in Venice to about
200,000 fans watching in Plazza San Marco.
The “Division Bell” Tour
was aimed at stadiums, with the band playing to an average of 45,000 people per
night. In London, however, Pink Floyd returned to Earl’s Court, playing 15
nights at the 20,000 capacity venue to packed houses.
Spectacular
stadium shows had by now, become the norm, with Pink Floyd underlining their
status as the pioneers during the “Division Bell Tour”, captured to stunning
effect on the Pulse DVD and beating all records in terms of gate receipts.
Despite the size and scale
of these shows, Pink Floyd’s true live
impact was evident when Gilmour, Mason, Waters and Wright walked onto the stage
together for the first time in 24 years, nor did they need one.
