389) Kanger
Valley National Park, Jagdalpur: A Special Cover issued by the Department of
Posts, Chhattisgarh Postal Circle on 25.06.2016:
The Front of the Special Cover
The Front of the Special
Cover is inscribed “Kanger Ghati Rashtriya Udyaan, Jagdalpur” (in Hindi) and “Kanger
Valley National Park, Jagdalpur” (in English). Below the inscription is a
picture of the Gracula religiosa Peninsularis “Bastar Pahadi Myna” (in Hindi)
meaning the “Bastar Hill Myna” (which is the State Bird of the Indian state of Chhattisgarh).
The 500 Paise or Rs.5/-
stamp was issued in 2015 celebrating the Centenary of the establishment of the
Zoological Survey of India in 1915. (The link to my post on this stamp issue is here and is also
given in the list of links at the end of this post: 26) Centenary of the setting up of the Zoological Survey of India: Commemorative stamps issued by India Post).
The Cancellation stamp is
inscribed “Sanchalak Kanger Ghati Rashtriya Udyaan, Jagdalpur (in Hindi) and “Director
Kanger Valley National Park, Jagdalpur” (in English). The Cancellation is dated
“25.06.2016” and is of Jagdalpur H.O.
The Back of the Special Cover
On the Back of the Special
Cover is seen a smaller picture of the Bastar Hill Myna together with the
inscription – “Bastar Pahadi Myna Chhattisgarh Ka Rajkiya Pakshi Hai. Yeh
Pakshi Chhattisgarh Ke Bastar Tatha Seemavarti Odisha Prant Mein Paya Jaata
Hai. Yeh Maanav Aawaz Ki Hu-Ba-Hu Nakal Karne Wali Pakshi Hai” (in Hindi) and
“Bastar Hill Myna is the
State Bird of Chhattisgarh. It’s habitat is in the Bastar Region of
Chhattisgarh and adjoining border of Odisha. It is the best Mimic Bird of the
World”.
(Interestingly, the Hindi
version and the English version differ from each other in that the
English version mentions that “It is the best Mimic Bird in the World” while
the Hindi version only states that “it is a bird which can mimic/copy human
voice verbatim”. There is no mention of the bird being the “best Mimic Bird of
the World” in the Hindi version).
Also mentioned on this
face is the date of release of the Special Cover: 25.06.2016. The logo of India Post is to the bottom
left and the name of the issuing authority “Bhartiya Dak Vibhag, Chhattisgarh
Parimandal” (in Hindi).
About
Kanger Valley National Park:
The Kanger Valley Park was
declared a National Park in 1982 by the Government of India.
The Park is spread over an
area of 200 sq. km (or 77 sq. miles) and consists of chiefly hill terrain. Located amidst the 34 km long scenic Kanger
Valley Biosphere Reserve (which has an average width of 6 kms (or 3.7 km),
the Kanger Valley National Park is one of the most beautiful and picturesque
National Parks in India. The Valley starts from the Tirathgarh waterfalls and
goes upto the Kolab River on the Odisha State boundary.
The Kanger Valley National
Park is well-known for its extremely
heterogeneous land formations ranging from low flat and gentle areas to steep
slopes, plateaus, valleys and streams. The vast undulating terrain of
the Kanger Valley National Park caters to diverse habitats which provide
an ideal place for diverse kinds of flora and fauna. The Park derives its name
from the Kanger River, which flows throughout its length and is among the few
perennial rivers of Bastar. The whole National Park is the catchment of the
Godavari River.
The altitude of the Park
varies from 338 to 781 metres (or 1,109 to 2,562 feet) above mean sea-level.
Two
Forest Ranges:
The Park comprises two Forest
ranges – Kotamsar and Koleng Ranges.
The Kotamsar Range
forms the Western half on the Park and is dotted with villages on its boundary,
with very little forest area outside the park for fuel wood, small wood, bamboo
and other non-timber forest produce. The “Zone of Influence” (ZI) for people in
this Range is about 10 kms.
The Koleng Range
forms the eastern half of the Park and has a lesser number of villages on its
boundary and is completely free from biotic pressure. In the central portion,
the Zone of Influence is about 10 kms and on the Eastern boundary it is about 5
Kms.
Location-wise, there are
about 48 villages within a 5 km radius of the Park boundary and only one
forest village – Kotamsar – inside the National Park.
Flora
and Fauna of the Kanger valley National Park:
The National Park has
around 553 varieties of floral species out of which 12 species are new to
Chhattisgarh and 43 species are rare.
The forest cover is mostly
of mixed moist deciduous type, with a predominance of Sal, Teak and Bamboo
trees. Floral diversity includes in- situ gene banks of medicinal plants,
grasses, climbers, wild sugarcane, canes, ferns, epiphytes etc.
The Fauna at this
National Park includes – 49 species of mammals, 144 species of birds, 16
species of amphibians, 37 species of reptiles, 56 species of fishes, 91 species
of butterflies, 26 species of moths and 113 species of spiders.
Sightings have included
– tigers, leopards, panthers, mouse
deer, wild cat, chital, sambar, barking deer, jackals, langurs, rhesus macaque,
sloth bear, flying squirrels, wild boar, striped hyena, rabbits, pythons,
cobras, crocodiles, monitor lizards, snakes et al.
The Avian fauna
includes – hill myna, spotted owlet, red jungle fowl, racket-tailed
drongos, peacocks, parrots, steppe eagles, red spur fowl, doves, partridges, treepies
and varieties of herons etc.
The
Park is famous for its Bio-Diversity, picturesque landscapes & subterranean
geomorphological limestone caves:
Situated near Jagdalpur,
in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh it is one of the most beautiful and
densest National parks , which is recognised for its bio-diversity and has
several picturesque landscapes, breath-taking water-falls, pre-historic
subterranean geomorphologic limestone caves and is home to the Bastar Hill Myna, which is the State Bird of Chhattisgarh.
The Bastar Hill Myna, which is the state Bird of Chhattisgarh
Moreover, the National
Park has a considerable tribal population and is an ideal destination for
wildlife enthusiasts, nature lovers, researchers, anthropologists and for
studying and interacting with the unique tribes of the region.
The National Park is well
known for the presence of subterranean geomorphological limestone caves with
dripstones and flowstones, which are a major tourist attraction. The Park also has huge limestone deposits –
some in cave form and others in layers upon layers.
Some
of the more famous caves are – Kotamsar Cave (about 35 metres below ground level and 1371
metres long – making it the longest cave in India and the second biggest in the
World. It was discovered in 1900 AD by the local tribes. There are several
tribal folk-lore relating to the caves), Kailash
Cave (about 40 metres above ground and 250 metres in length. Among
other stalactites and stalagmites, it has a huge stalagmite formation that
looks like a “Shivling”), Dandak Cave, Devgiri Cave.
The formations of stalactites and stalagmites in
the caves are still enlarging.
The caves provide shelter
to several species of wildlife, chiefly among them – leopards, porcupines,
hyenas, bears, bats, fishes, snakes, frogs, crickets etc. The overhangs are
mostly found in the Western part (Tirathgarh) and Eastern part, near the Kolab
River which also provide shelter to rock bees. Sporadic dens are found on the
rocky portions of the National Park which are home to wild dogs (or “dholes”),
jackals, wolves, foxes, mongoose et al. In the cliffs are found bats, pigeons,
swifts and a few reptile species. The Kanger River also provides shelter to
crocodiles and Indian otters.
Tirathgarh
Waterfalls:
The Tirathgarh Waterfalls
Located around 38 kms from
Jagdalpur is the scenic Tirathgarh Waterfalls is nicknamed the “Milky
Fall” because of the white colour of the water as it descends down a rocky
slope. The water here splits into multiple falls, creating a stunning vista for
the tourist, with water falling down at an incredible speed, more than 300 feet
onto the Mugabahar River below. Interestingly,
all around can be seen the ruins of a 1,000 year old, advanced Hindu
Civilisation with an ancient temple as well.
The waterfalls come under the eco-tourism
venture of the State Tourism department and it enjoins the Kanger Valley National
Park.
Other
popular tourist spots:
In addition, some other
popular tourist spots are the Kanger Dhara and Bhainsa Dhara (a
Crocodile Park) and two exotic picnic resorts in the Park.
The Park also, provides nature
trails – from Kamanar barrier to Tirathgarh Waterfalls (3.0 Kms) and from
Kailash Cave to Kailash lake (about 1.5 kms).

Thanks, Vikram. Got to know of it only when I researched this Special Cover. Great waterfalls, forest canopy, Stalactites & Stalagmites with best in the world sized Subterranean caves, great sightings of flora & fauna. Would love to go too !!

I believe so. Visited the Tadoba Andhari Forest Reserve a few years ago. The Naxals have a code under which "civilian" passers by are not harmed. Maybe the code is followed in these areas as well. But I would only stick to arm-chair "story-telling" and not venture out, till I am absolutely sure. After all I have several more stories to share.
