Royal Mail, UK is issuing a set of stamps on 09.07.2020 which celebrate the Band - QUEEN - one of the UK's greatest music legends. This is the third Band being covered after - the Beatles, Pink Floyd and Elton John.

Included in the issue are a combo of a choice of coin variants as well, issued by the Royal Mint, UK which are of three variants - Gold (Proof coins) & Silver (Proof & Uncirculated variants).

With over three decades of several hits to their names, there is a Queen song for just about everybody. What is extraordinary, however, is the fact that the time spent with their iconic frontman - Freddie  Mercury has been eclipsed by the time he passed away, yet the band remains as popular as ever.

About Freddie Mercury (05.09.1946-24.11.1991):

Freddie Mercury (born Farrokh Bulsara) was a singer, songwriter, record producer and lead vocalist of the Rock Bank - Queen.

He is regarded as one of the greatest lead singers in the history of rock music. Known for his flamboyant stage persona and four-octave vocal range, he defied conventions of a Rock front-man, with his highly theatrical style influencing the artistic direction of Queen.

He was born in 1946 in Zanzibar to Parsi-Indian parents and attended English style boarding schools in India from the age of eight.

One of the schools he studied in was St. Peter's School, a British style boarding school for boys in Panchgani in Mahabaleshwar, which is very close to Pune where we reside. We have visited Panchgani/Mahabaleshwar often & also visited his school, where he is still remembered as one of the school's most illustrious alumni.

The family  returned to Zanzibar after secondary school.

In 1964, his family fled the Zanzibar Revolution and moved to Middlesex, England.

Having studied and written music for several years, he formed the band "Queen" in 1970 with guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor. Mercury wrote numerous hits for Queen including - "Killer Queen", "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Somebody to Love", "We are the Champions", "Don't Stop Me Now" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love".

His charismatic stage performances often saw him interact with the audiences, as was seen at the 1985 "Live Aid" concert. He also led a solo career and served as a producer and guest musician for other artists.

He passed away in 1991 due to complications from AIDS. Mercury had continued to record with Queen following his diagnosis in 1987 and posthumously featured on the Band's final album - "Made in Heaven" (1995).

In 1992, his tribute concert was held at Wembley Stadium. His career with Queen was dramatised in the biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody" (1018).

In 1990, he and other Queen members were awarded the "Brit Award" for Outstanding Contribution to British Music and one year after he passed away, Mercury was awarded it individually.

In 2005, Queen was awarded an "Ivor Novello Award" for outstanding Song Collection from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors.

In 2002, Mercury ranked 58th in BBC's poll of 100 Greatest Britons.

In 2001, he was posthumously inducted into the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame", in 2003, the "Songwriter's Hall of Fame" and in 2004 in the "UK Music Hall of Fame".
