1391) "Ancient Postal Routes", France: A postage stamp of 1.40 Euro issued by La Poste (French Post): Date of Stamp issue: 05.06.2020:
The history of the roads of France is also that of the Post Roads from the time when the Royalty, wishing to ensure the rapid circulation of official dispatches, established the Post Office for horses in the middle of the century.
This organisation was based on two emblematic trades and a private infrastructure - postillions accompany bags of mails and couriers, post masters, who paid dearly for the privilege of holding official post relays positioned every seven leagues.
This system determined post routes, frequently mapped since 1632 and maintained by the engineers of Bridges and Roads since 1747.
Radiating first in star from Paris, the network had 27 destinations in 1790, then it was grown with transverse links allowing connections to the main cities of the kingdom and with one another. There were by now around 40 well-defined routes. This post road network is still seen across several national motorways.
On these expressways, galloping was primarily the reserve of "stationery" routes, accessible to travellers since 1794 - there were 4,000 in 1815 and 60,000 in 1829. At the heart of the 19th century, average speeds of 12 to 14 kilometres per hour were reached. Other non-postal and slower services concerning the transport of goods by trolleys, as well as, that of travellers by coaches and coaches of courier companies.
It was along these ancient routes, that the first memorable experiences of the journey, carried out in conditions pf adventure, discomfort and imponderable seasonal factors, were undertaken. From the wheel-barrow pulled by a horse, to trunks without shock absorbers and on two wheels, to the Briska model of the 1830s, equipped with a convertible, postal vehicles always knew how to find in the relay the light lit during the night, because running the post office suffered no interruption.
The stamp issued by La Poste (French Post) features a Briska Post Trunk on a background of the Postal roads.
