1387) Iguanodon, United Kingdom: Second Coin in a three Coin 50 Pence Coin Series titled "Tales of the Earth - Dinosauria", brought out by the Royal Mint, UK in five Variants - Gold, Silver (x2 coins) and Cupro-nickel (x 2 coins): Year of Coin issue: 2020:

The Iguanodon is the second coin in the 3-Coin Series titled "Tales of the Earth Dinosauria Collection" brought out by the Royal Mint, UK, which also includes the Megalosaurus and Hylaeosaurus.

For millions of years, dinosaurs roamed the Earth before they became extinct in the Mesozoic Era, Cretaceous Period, about 70 to 135 million years ago. Their fossilised remains lay buried underground until  their discovery started in Britain.

The Dinosauria Collection also marks a new milestone for the Royal Mint, as the first coin series to feature augmented reality technology. Upon receiving the coin, one only has to download the Royal Mint's "Activate App" and scan the packaging to access an unlimited content including fascinating facts, animated clips and imagery.

The Brilliant Uncirculated Base Metal coins also feature the latest colour printing techniques showcasing the three dinosaurs in vivid colour, providing an accurate reconstruction of the dinosaurs.

The coins have been designed with the expert co-ordination of the Earth Sciences Department of the Natural History Museum, with the Reverse sides featuring an original design by Paleo-Artist Robert Nicholls, who has been creating natural history specimens for museums and universities around the world for over two decades.

His depictions show an anatomically accurate reconstruction of the three dinosaurs and the environment they lived in. To each side of the dinosaur represented, are depictions of the flora of the time that the dinosaurs existed and underneath the image is a depiction of the original fossils as they were found.

Paleo Art is an intensely fascinating field in which artists use speculative, but scientifically backed art to depict prehistoric life.

The dinosaur's name is inscribed on the upper periphery of each coin and the discoverer of the fossil's name Mantell on the lower periphery.

About the Iguanodon: An Ornithopod dinosaur (mid - late Jurassic Period & early Cretaeous Periods: - 126 million years ago):

Iguanodon (meaning "Iguana-tooth") named in 1825 is a genus of ornithopod dinosaur that existed about half-way between the first of the swift bipedal hypsilophodontids of the mid-Jurassic and the duck-billed dinosaurs of the late Cretaceous Period.

While many species have been classified in the genus Iguanodon, dating from the late Jurassic Period to the early Cretaceous Period of Asia., Europe and North America, taxonomic revision in the early 21st Century has defined Iguanodon to be based on a well-substantiated species "I. bernissartensis" which lived from the late Barremian to the earliest Aptian Ages(Early Cretaceous) in Belgium, Spain, Germany and England between 126 and 122 million years ago.

Iguanodon were large, bulky herbivores.

Distinctive features include large thumb spikes, which were used for defence against predators, combined with long prehensile fifth fingers able to forage for food.

The genus was named in 1825 by English geologist Gideon Mantell, but was discovered by William Harding Bensted, based on fossil specimens, after Megalosaurus

In 1842, so many big reptilian bones had turned up which prompted the British paleontologist Richard Owen to propose to the British Association of Science the recognition of a "distinct tribe or sub-orderof Saurian Reptiles" as "Dinosauria".

Together with Megalosaurus and Hylaeosaurus, it was one of the three genera originally used to define Dinosauria.

The three dinosaurs included in the Coin Series, shown in their natural habitat against the Reverses of the Silver 50 Pence coins with applied colour

On Owen's directions, a model was made by a sculptor named Waterhouse Hawkins of a reconstructed life-sized restoration of an Iguanodon in Crystal Palace Park, which was duly celebrated with an elegant dinner on 31.12.1853 served inside the Iguanodon model. The restorers still not too certain how the monster looked in real life, placed on the Iguanodon's nose, rhinoceros fashion, the big spike that the biped dinosaur had actually carried on its thumb.

This image of the elegant dinner being served to eminent persons in the Iguanodon model in Crystal Palace Park is from a book in my personal library titled "Life Before Man - the Emergence of Man" a Time Life publication

The inscription reads - "At an 1853 banquet inside a reconstructed dinosaur, palaeontologist , Richard Owen toasts predecessor experts named on signs. The evening, said the Illustrated London News, was filled with "philosophic mirth" - for which food and drink are readied at lower right, near a piece of dinosaur."

The Iguanodon model so greatly increased the public interest for prehistoric reptiles that over fifty other species were classified under the genus, originally because dinosaurs were not well known.

The genus Iguanodon belongs to the larger group Iguanodontia, along  with the duck-billed hadrosaurs.

Scientific understanding of Iguanodon has evolved over time as new information has been obtained from fossils. The numerous specimens of this genus, including near complete skeletons from two well-known bone beds have provided insight regarding many aspects of the living animal, including feeding, movement and social behaviour.

Several motion pictures have featured the Iguanodon. In the 2000 Disney animated film "Dinosaur", an Iguanodon named Aladar featured as the protagonist with four other Iguanodonts as the other main characters - Neera, Kron, Bruton and his unnamed scout.

Iguanodon also featured on the BBC TV documentary mini-series  titled "Walking with Dinosaurs" (1999) and also played a starring role in Arthur Conan Doyle's book - "The Lost World" and the Discovery Chammel documentary "Dinosaur Planet". A main belt asteroid 1989 CB3 has been named 9941 Iguanodon.
