About Julian Gayarre:

Born in 1844 in a Navarrese family from the small Pyrenean town of Roncal, Julian Gayarre began singing with the Orfeon Pamplones choir.

Struck by the beauty of his voice, the chapel master and composer Hilarion Eslava made him obtain a scholarship to study at the Conservatory of Madrid in 1865.

He continued his apprenticeship in Italy and made his first appearance in 1869 at the Varese Theater in Donizetti's L'Elixir d'omour.

He performed on the biggest stages in Europe and was crowned the best tenor in the world in 1876 at La Scala in Milan after his performance of Fernando in La Favorite.

He played this role at the Monte-Carlo Opera during the 1882 season and also sang on the Monegasque stage in Lucia di Lammermoor and Rigoletto.
