2166) "Black Hole", Niue Island: The "Universe Coin Series": A $5 (Five Dollars) Antique Finish Silver Coin minted by the Gdansk Mint, Poland on behalf of Niue Island: Date/Year of Coin issue: 2021 (with availability of Coin from 18.02.2022):
Black Hole:
This is the second coin of the "Universe" series, which depicts unusual elements of the cosmos. This coin focuses on the theme of a "black hole".
A black hole is a region of spacetime where gravity is so strong that nothing — no particles or even electromagnetic radiation such as light — can escape from it.
A Black Hole is a region of space-time which, due to the influence of gravity, nothing - including light and information - can leave.
According to the General Theory of Relativity, a sufficiently compact mass can deform spacetime to form a Black Hole.
The Black Hole is surrounded by a mathematically defined surface called the "Event Horizon", which marks the boundary of no return.
It is called "Black" because it completely absorbs light hitting the horizon, reflecting nothing.
As Black Holes cannot be observed directly, their presence is inferred from their interaction with surrounding matter and with light and other types of electromagnetic radiation.
The Coin:
The Reverse of the $5 (Five Dollars) Silver Coin shows a colourful representation of the appearance of a black hole.
A real piece of meteorite is placed in the centre of the Coin.
Another interesting addition is the fluorescent printing, which makes the coin glow in the dark.
This face of the Coin is concave, which imitates the absorption of the surroundings by a black hole.
The Obverse of the $5 (Five Dollars) Silver Coin depicts an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, whose initials "IRB" appear below the Queen's neck. The Queen appears to be just outside the Event Horizon.
The peripheral inscriptions are (clockwise) - "ELIZABETH II. NIUE. 5 DOLLARS. UNIVERSE. Ag 999. 2021".
