2159) "Starry Night" a painting by Vincent Van Gogh, Republic of Ghana: A Digital Print Impression of the painting features on this Silver, Antique Finish Coin minted by Mint XXI, Poland on behalf of the Republic of Ghana: Year of Coin issue: 2021:
Vincent Willem van Gogh (30.03.1853 – 29.07.1890) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who posthumously became one of the most famous and influential figures in Western art history.
In a decade, he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits, and are characterised by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art.
Not commercially successful, he struggled with severe depression and poverty, eventually leading to his suicide at age thirty-seven. During his lifetime, he was considered a madman and a failure. He only became famous after his suicide, and came to be seen as a misunderstood genius in the public imagination.
His reputation grew in the early 20th century as elements of his style came to be incorporated by the Fauves and German Expressionists.
He attained widespread critical and commercial success over the ensuing decades, and is remembered as an important but tragic painter whose troubled personality typifies the romantic ideal of the tortured artist.
Presently, Van Gogh's works are among the world's most expensive paintings to have ever sold, and his legacy is honoured by a museum in his name, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which holds the world's largest collection of his paintings and drawings.
Notable works of Van Gogh:
The Potato Eaters (1885), Sunflowers (1887), Bedroom in Arles (1888), The Starry Night (1889), Portrait of Dr. Gachet (1890), Wheatfield with Crows (1890), The Siesta (1890), Church at Auvers (1890)
Vincent Van Gogh's painting - Starry Night:
Starry Night is one of the most recognized pieces of art in the world. It is absolutely everywhere, too. It can be seen on coffee, mugs, t-shirts, towels, magnets, etc. It is a magnificent piece of art. "Starry Night" is a testament to how its beauty is timeless and universal.
The Story of the "Starry Night":
Vincent van Gogh painted Starry Night in 1889 during his stay at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
Van Gogh lived well in the hospital. He was allowed more freedoms than any of the other patients. If attended, he could leave the hospital grounds and was allowed to paint, read, and withdraw into his own room.
He was even given a studio. While he suffered from the occasional relapse into paranoia and fits - officially he had been diagnosed with epileptic fits - it seemed his mental health was recovering.
Unfortunately, he relapsed. He began to suffer hallucination and have thoughts of suicide as he plunged into depression.
Accordingly, there was a tonal shift in his work. He returned to incorporating the darker colours from the beginning of his career and Starry Night is a wonderful example of that shift.
Blue dominates the painting, blending hills into the sky. The little village lays at the base in the painting in browns, greys, and blues. Even though each building is clearly outlined in black, the yellow and white of the stars and the moon stand out against the sky, drawing the eyes to the sky. They are the big highlights of the painting.

Thank you so much for visiting the post, Satyajit. Vincent Van Gogh is my favourite painter along with Gustav Klimt. I have quite a few books on both of them.
