926) Algeria: i) Introduction of two new denominations of 500 and 1,000 Algerian Dinars (AD), which will kick-start the new "Fifth Series of Algerian Dinar Banknotes" ii) A 100 Algerian Dinar tri-metallic coin which will replace the 100 Algerian Dinar circulating Banknote of the same denomination:

The Banque d'Algerie has on 03.02.2019 announced that it will be putting into circulation two newly designed Banknotes with a nominal value of 500 and 1,000 Algerian Dinars, as well as, a new 100 Dinar circulation coin.

The new series of Banknotes and coins present historical and modern elements of Algeria, such as, the Algerian satellite ALCOMSAT I, the Grand Mosque of Algiers and two historical personalities - the founder of modern Algeria Emir Abdelkader and King Berber of Numidia, Jugurtha.

These Banknotes will be part of a new Banknote Series beginning with these two denominations

The new Banknote series and coin have been introduced to "refresh the currency" rather than "to change the National currency". As such, replacing the Banknotes and coins is targeted as acting as a substitution for recycling presently circulating Banknotes of these two denominations (500 and 1,000 Algerian Dinars), particularly, as some Banknotes have been  in circulation for more than three decades.

The change of Banknotes will also help in refreshing the Banknotes already in circulation and introducing new Banknotes by using new techniques of securing and promoting the evolution of Algeria in terms of development and modernisation.

The new 500 and 1,000 Algerian Dinar Banknotes:

The theme for the re-design of the 500 Algerian Dinar is "Algeria in the era of information and communication technologies":

On the Front of the 500 Algerian Dinar Banknote, is depicted the Algerian telecommunication satellite ALCOMSAT-I orbiting above the continent of Africa, which is the first Algerian communication satellite launched on 10.12.2017 from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in Sichuan, China.

The satellite is designed for 15 years of operational lifetime and is overseen by the Algerian Space Agency whose function is for telecommunications, television broadcasting and internet connectivity.

The 1,000 Dinar Banknote:

The theme for the re-design of the 1,000 Algerian Dinar Banknote is "Culture, tradition and modernity":

On the Front of the 1,000 Algerian Dinar Banknote is depicted an image of the Great Mosque of Algiers, which is presently under construction.

When this structure is completed, it will be the largest in Africa, with the tallest minaret in the world reaching a height of 265.0 metres (or about 865.0 feet).

The complex which is close to the Bay of Algiers, will also include a Koranic school, a library and a museum and will have the capacity to accommodate up to 120,000 persons, which will be connected to a marina on the Mediterranean Sea by two panoramic walkways.

Both versions of the Banknotes will include the symbolic date of "November 1, 2018", which is the 64th anniversary date of the birth of the National Liberation Front (NLF) founded in 1954.

The watermarks also include a portrait of Emir Abdelkader.

The new Banknotes will incorporate additional security features and gravitate in length to assist visually impaired/challenged persons to identify the Banknotes by denomination.

The new series of Banknotes  (the Fifth Series of Banknotes) will in future, feature designs that will include portraits of all heads of State of Algeria since independence

The entire Series will also have an additional holographic strip on the Front.

Some other denominations in the new series will retain the watermark image of the founder of the modern Algerian state - Prince Abdul Qadir al-Jazairi or as he is known - Emir Abdelkader.

The presently circulating Series  (the Fourth series) of Banknotes consisting of 100, 200, 500, 1,000 and  2,000 Algerian Dinars was introduced into circulation in 1995, with the 2,000 Algerian Dinar Banknote being circulated in 2011.

The new Banknotes are scheduled for their official release in November 2019, to coincide with the anniversary of the ourbreak of the Algerian revolution

These Banknotes will circulate alongside the presently circulating denominations until further notice is given by the Bank of Algeria.

The new design 100 Algerian tri-metallic coin:

The 100 Algerian Dinar coin, which is being issued with a view to replace the 100 Dinar circulating Banknote will include the image of Algeria's telecommunication satellite "ALCOMSAT -1".

The 100 Algerian Dinar Coin is made of three different metals - the circle is gray stainless steel, while the core is in pinkish-yellow copper and nickel.

The 100 Algerian Dinar Coin is intended at replacing the 100 Algerian Dinar Banknote.

At present, there are nine different denominations of coins whose values range from 50 cents to 200 Algerian Dinars.
