928) Lithuania: Celebrating the Uzgavenes Fesitval: ("The end of winter & the coming of spring"): Bank of Lithuania has issued two coins - A 5 Euro Silver Coin & a 1.5 Euro Cupro-nickel Coin in honour of the festival:

Shrove Tuesday, known as Uzgavenes in Lithuania,  is by far the merriest of all Lithuanian celebrations.

The day is traditionally full of cheer, mischief and all forms of self-expression. Each of the Uzgayenes rituals welcomes the coming of spring with the slogan "Winter, winter go away, let spring out to play".

Uzgavenes is a Lithuanian festival that takes place during the seventh week before Easter ("Ash Wednesday" - this is a Christian holiday of prayer, fasting and repentance. It is preceded by Shrove Tuesday and falls on the first day of Lent, the six weeks of penitence before Easter Ash). Is name literally means "The time before Lent".

The celebration corresponds to the Roman Catholic  holiday traditions in other parts of the globe - like "Mardi Gras" Shrove Tuesday and Carnaval. Uzgavenes begins on the night before Ash Wednesday, when an effigy of winter (usually named "More") is burnt.

A major element of the holiday, meant to symbolise the defeat of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, is a staged battle between "Lasininis" ("porky") personifying winter and "Kanapinis" ("hempen man") personifying spring.

Devils, witches, goats, the grim reaper, gypsies and other joyful and frightening characters appear in costumes during the celebrations. The participants and masqueraders dance and eat the traditional dish of the holiday - pancakes with a variety of toppings.

In the Lithuanian capital Vilnius, the celebration takes place on Gediminas Avenue, as well as, at many youth clubs. The festival is a major event at Rumsiskes open-air ethnographic museum. Participants traditionally dress and act as Romani people and Jews, wearing masks with grotesque features, beards and visible ear locks.

Uzgayenes is spontaneous in nature and there is no divider between the theatrical festivities of the merrymakers and the spectators, as everyone knows what is happening and how to fit in.

The Coins brought out by the Bank of Lithuania to celebrate the coming of the Festival of Uzgayenes:
