The National Bank of Rwanda has issued on 11.02.2019, two new Banknote denominations of 1,000 and 500 Francs, which have kick-started a new Series of Banknotes and integrated new designs and security features so as to deter counterfeiters.

The two Banknotes also bear Rwanda's cultural insignia.

The designs/themes of both Banknotes in the new Series incorporate elements that highlight the beauty of Rwandan culture and the country's tourism.

It is expected that the designs of these Banknotes will be seen as part of the promotion of the economic contribution of the activity.

The Front of the 1,000 Francs Banknote depicts the Ethnographic Museum (formerly the National Museum of Rwanda, which is located in Butare, a city in the Southern Province and is the former colonial capital of Rwanda. The date shown on the Front of the Banknote is "01.02.2019"

On top of the Banknote is mentioned "BANKI NKURU Y'U RWANDA" (meaning "National Bank of Rwanda") and on the bottom the inscription reads "AMARAFARANGA IGIHUMBI" (meaning "One Thousand Francs").

The Back of the 1,000 Francs Banknote shows an image of a golden monkey, a species prevalent in Central Sub-Saharan Africa, which resides in the Volcanoes National Park.

The Dimensions of this Banknote are 140 mm x 72 mm and its Colour is predominantly blue (the same as in the presently circulating Banknote Series).

The Front of the 500 Francs Banknote, shown against a background image of the Back of the Banknote.

The Front of the 500 Francs Banknote showcases a depiction of the Nyungwe Canopy, a walkway which is in the Nyungwe National Park - an untouched natural rainforest that is filled with exiting bio-diversity located in the South-west corner of Rwanda.

On the top of this Banknote is mentioned "BANKI NKURU Y'U RWANDA" (meaning "National Bank of Rwanda"), while on the bottom is mentioned "AMARAFARANGA MAGANA ATANU" (meaning "Five Hundred Francs").

The Back of the 500 Francs Banknote depicts three young students with laptops, reflecting Rwanda's efforts to promote and strengthen quality education using information technology.

The Dimensions of this Banknote are 135 mm x 72 mm and its Colour is predominantly brown (different from the current blue, in the presently circulating Banknote Series, so as to distinguish it from the 1,000 Francs Banknote)

The National Bank has further a clarified that the old Series of Banknotes will continue to circulate alongside the newly introduced Banknotes in cash transactions for the next three years until they are officially demonetised.

A proposal is presently under consideration to introduce a common currency - a new East African Shilling, for the six member states of the East African Community, which includes - Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.
