The 5th Series of Qatari Riyal banknotes salient features:

- On 18.12.2020 (Qatar National Day), the Fifth Series of Qatari Banknotes have been put into circulation.

- As part of the new series, Qatar has introduced a new denomination of QR 200.

- All  Banknote denominations  have a new design and extra features.

- The Front Designs of the new banknotes share a common theme based on traditional geometric patterns, the State of Qatar flag, Qatari flora (Dreama) and an ornate gate representing the historical Qatari architecture. 

- The Back Designs comprise themes reflecting Qatari tradition, Islamic history, culture, flora and fauna and development of education, sport and the economy.

- The public was allowed  to withdraw new notes from ATMs as of 12:01 am, Friday, December 18.

- New notes will have 64 state-of-the-art security specifications.   

The designs of the 5th Series of Qatari Banknotes include

QR1 shows Traditional Dhow (Bateel) and the Oyster and Pearl Monument.

QR5 shows Traditional desert scene comprising fauna (Arab horses, Camel, Oryxes), flora (Al Qataf) and 'hair tent (buryuut hajar)'.

QR10 shows Lusail Stadium, Torch Tower (Aspire Zone), Sidra Medicine and Education City (Qatar Foundation).

QR 50 shows Qatar Central Bank building and Ministry of Finance building.

QR 100  shows an image of the Abu Al Qubaib Mosque or the Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque.

QR 200 shows pictures of Palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani, Qatar National Museum and Museum of Islamic Art.

QR 500 shows Ras Laffan LNG refinery and LNG canter ship.

Demonetisation of the old Banknotes:

The old banknotes of the Fourth Series will be in circulation and could be exchanged through local banks in the next three months (later extended upto 01.07.2021), and after that, from Qatar Central Bank for ten years from the date of the withdrawal decision.

After July 2021, the Banknotes of the Fourth Series will become illegal and indemnified currency.

Security Features of the new Banknotes:

The new Banknotes have 64 State-of-the-Art Security features, the prominent ones being:

1)  Each security thread shows the value of the denomination.

2) The numerals and horizontal line prints are raised for the benefit of blind and visually impaired users.

3) When the Banknote is lifted up to the light to see the incomplete shapes on the Front and Back of the Banknote combine to form the Banknote’s value.

4)   When the Banknote lifted up to the light to  the watermark of the State of Qatar Crest and denomination numerals can be seen.

5)    Upon tilting the Banknote changes to the appearance of the hologram become visible. 

6)    Upon tilting the Banknote one can see the changes to the appearance of the security thread.

7)    When the Banknote is tilted, one can see the Dreama flower on the gate changing  colour and a bright circle moving within the flower.

 Qatar 500 Riyals 2021:

The Front of the QR 500 (Qatari Rial) Banknote is depicts traditional Geometric Patterns, the State of Qatar Flag, Qatari Flora (Dreama) and an Ornate Gate representing the historical Qatari Architecture. 


The Back of the QR 500 (Qatari Rial) Banknote shows Ras Laffan LNG Refinery and LNG Canter Ship.
