This "FLOWER MOTIFS" booklet is made up of 12 self-adhesive postage stamps illustrated with drawings printed on fabrics representing flowers.
The stamps are illustrated by flowers which were drawn and then printed on fabrics.
The designs are kept at the "Musée de l'Impression des Etoffes" ("The Museum of Textile/Fabric Printing") in Mulhouse, like so many other coupons, with multiple techniques, from all over the world.
The richness of this museum, both qualitative and quantitative, is its greatest strength. Preserving, restoring and enhancing this unique ensemble is its daily task.
In May, the beautiful season is setting in. Crocuses, hyacinths and daffodils and tulips appeared a few weeks ago. Soon roses, lily of the valley, lilac will enchant the visitors.
After the months of May and June, summer will be here with its poppies in the fields, its wild irises or in the gardens. The generous peonies follow one another according to their exposure and their color. Hydrangeas, shrubs that range from blue to pink, thrive without too much sun and last all summer. Sunflower and gladioli are the expression of full sun. Each stamp offers us colors, movement, sun… they are works of art.
The Museum of Textile Printing aims to increase understanding and awareness of textile printing. Decorative art museum, industrial museum, local history museum, society museum, fashion museum, the museum of printing oscillates between many heritage poles which are all important.
About the Museum of Textile/Fabric Printing, Mulhouse:
In 1833, a group of textile manufacturers based in and around Mulhouse formed an Industrial Society known as the “Societé Industrielle”. They decided to collectively archive the designs they produced.
In order to complement their own personal collections they added designs from other countries, and from earlier times.
This collection grew in importance to become what is today the premier collection of printed textiles in the world.
The original purpose of this design collection was to inspire artists and designers of the time by introducing them to new and different patterns and styles.
This long established history of sharing ideas continues today in the form of the textile research room, the S.U.D (Service of using documents) as a professional service. More than 6 million samples are housed here, spanning three centuries of design history.
In 1880, in order to house a part of the Industrial Society’s ever growing collections the impressive museum Rue des Bonnes Gens was built. Many of the items in the growing collection were bought or donated by local manufacturers who belonged to the Industrial Society.
In 1955 an association was formed in order to run the museum.
Presently, 6 million samples including 50,000 textile samples, and pieces ranging from bedcovers to lengths of cloth span the history of printed textiles from the 18th Century to the present day.
The Museum’s premier collection is still housed in the original building, providing a beautiful new environment for these priceless works.
