About Clostermann and Roman:

Since its inception, the "Post-Airmail Stamp Series" by La Poste, France has celebrated historic aviator duos, commemorating inseparable pilots: Costes and Le Brix, Mermoz and Saint Exupéry, Guillaumet and Codos et al.

In 2021, an Air Mail stamp brings together two aviators who distinguished themselves separately during the Second World War on the occasion of two Anniversaries:

The 100th anniversary of the birth of Mr. Pierre Clostermann, both aces of the Second World War and the 80th anniversary of the death of Madame Claire Roman, the first female officer and Aviator in the French Air Force.

Pierre Henri Clostermann:

He was the son of a French diplomat - of Alsatian and Lorraine origin who were posted in Curitiba, (Brazil) having been born on 28.02.1921. He ditinguished himself during World War II as a Flying Ace in the Royal Air Force (FAFL).

Clostermann received the Croix de Guerre with 27 citations, as well as the Distinguished Flying Cross and bar , a high British decoration (also awarded to many foreign aviators). At the time of his death, he was "the most decorated man in France".

He passed away on 22.03.2006 (at the age of 85) at Montesquieu-des-Albères (France).

Claire Roman:

She was born Claire-Henriette-Emilie Chambaud on 25.03.1906 in Mulhouse (France) and died accidentally on 04.08.1941 in the department of Aude. She was the first woman aviatrix in the Free French Air Force and was awarded the War Cross 1939-1945.

On August 4, 1941, on learning of her sick mother in Pau, she boarded an Air Bleu airliner flying from Vichyto Pau. Caught in very bad weather conditions, the aircraft struck a mountain peak over the department of Aude. The pilot, the radio and the three passengers, including Claire Roman, were killed instantly.

The Stamp:

La Poste, France has issued the stamp and a mini-sheet of the Air Mail theme bearing the effigy of Claire Roman,  on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of her passing away and Pierre Clostermann on the occasion of the centenary of his birth.

The Postage stamp of 4.71 Euros shows the photos of Pierre Clostermann (1921-2006) and Claire Roman (1906-1941) and the aeroplanes they flew in the Great War. At right is mentioned - "Poste aerienne - 2021" (meaning "Air Mail").
