Indian Government Mint, Kolkata has issued a Quaternary Alloy (50% Silver) Coin commemorating the 125th Birth Anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Mint Bookings for the Coins ended on 31.03.2021, and the Coin has been received by me on 07.04.2021. Kudos to the IGM Kolkata for speeding up their delivery schedules.
It is presently, not only the oldest Indian Government Mint in operation, but also one which has made great strides in quality of workmanship/presentation in their products, customer service orientation, efficiency etc. over the past few years.
The Commemorative Coin:
The Cover of the Coin Album is titled "Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Ka 125 Van Jayanti Varsh" (in Hindi) and "125th Birth Anniversary Year of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose" (in English).
In the centre is seen a left facing representation of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose with the Indian Flag being raised by US soldiers at Iwo Jima after a bloody battle against the Japanese??? I thought that Subhas Chandra Bose's Indian National Army (INA) was fighting the British in India with Japanese support!!!!
The image on the Coin Album Cover is a super-imposition of the Indian Flag on a fluttering US Flag. Quite a faux pax on the part of the Album Cover designers. Just wondering if the Indian Flag could have been shown as being held up by Indian soldiers???
Pages 2 and 3 of the Coin Album seen together - Page 2 gives a brief description of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, while Page 3 enumerates the specifications of the Commemorative Coin.
An enlarged image of the Obverse of the Rs.125/- Coin.
At centre left is inscribed the name of the issuing country "BHARAT" (in Hindi), while "INDIA" (in English) is seen at centre right.
The Lion Capitol Emblem of the Government of India taken from the Pillar Edicts of legendary Emperor of Ancient India "Samrat Ashok" is in the centre displaying the motto "Satyamev Jayate" (meaning "Truth Always Prevails"). Below the Emblem is the denomination of the coin "Rs.125".
Page 4 of the Coin Album gives a brief about the specifications of the Coin in English and the Reverse of the Coin.
The specifications of the Coin are -
Denomination: Rs.125/-; Metal Composition: Quaternary Alloy: Silver 50%, Copper 40%, Zinc 5% and Nickel 5%; Shape: Circular; Outside Diameter: 44.00 mm; Standard Weight: 35.0 grams; No. of Serrations: 200; Year of issue: 2021; Minted by: India Government Mint, Kolkata.
The Reverse of the Rs.125/- Coin is inscribed - "125TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY YEAR OF NETAJI SUBHAS CHANDRA BOSE" (in both Hindi and English) on the outer periphery.

Page 5 of the Coin Album gives a brief description of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose (in English) -
"Subhas Chandra Bose affectionately called "Netaji" was an Indian Nationalist born on 23rd January 1897in Cuttack, Odisha.
In 1920, he appeared for the Indian Civil Service Competitive Exam and came out fourth in order of merit. However citing Nationalism to be a higher calling than the civil service, he did not join the same.
In 1921, he joined the Nationalist Movement led by Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian National Congress.
Bose at first worked with C.R. Das in Bengal under whose mentorship he flowered. Later he left Congress and formed the "Forward Block". He was one of the most prominent leaders of the Indian Freedom Struggle.
Netaji was strongly influenced by Swami Vivekananda's teaching and was known for his patriotic zeal as a student.
On January 26, 1941, he left his Calcutta residence in disguise and went outside India. He assumed leadership of the Indian Independence Movement in East Asia and founded the Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army). Azad Hind Fauj crossed the Burma Border and stood on Indian soil on March 18, 1944.
His contribution to the Indian Struggle for Independence will remain etched forever in Indian history.
This commemorative coin has been minted on the occasion of 125th Birth Anniversary year of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose".

Thank you Khanna sahab. The Kolkata mint has made a terrible faux pas. Netaji is being shown with a Indian flag being raised by US soldiers at Iwo Jima in the Pacific, in World War II after a bloody battle, instead of Indian National Army (INA) soldiers.

ReplyDelete"That's a shocking bit of info ..why don't you send an email to our PM ... It's better got rectified , if it's an error."
I have sent emails to CGM and GM, IGM Kolkata, as well as, the Manager (Marketing) pointing out this oversight. Perhaps, there is an explanation.
