About Ecole Nationale Des Chartes" (National School Charters):

The National School of Charters is a large establishment of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research.

Since 1821, this school of excellence has been training managers in the conservation of heritage, mainly written (archives and libraries), researchers and teacher-researchers in the field of historical and philological sciences.

Since its creation, the École des chartes has been a unique and original institution by bringing together the skills essential to the historical understanding of the past (palaeography, diplomacy, archival science, sigillography, numismatics, book history, philology, legal history, history of art, archeology), to read medieval charters or notary's archives, appreciate Renaissance incunabula or the contemporary daily press, or know how to read a monument or a work of art.

During its two-century existence, combining tradition and modernity, the School has never ceased to innovate and develop its teaching, both in the direction of new heritage (photography, press, video games) and in computer technologies and digital humanities.

The École des chartes has supported the writing of French history by paying close attention to sources and their critical edition, by unpublished studies and by public exhibitions.

Through its training action, it contributes to the preservation of national written memory, by taking up the contemporary challenges of the digital revolution of archives and books.

Two centuries after its establishment, the École des chartes continues its initial vocation of transmitting methods and knowledge in the service of the conservation and study of the sources of history."
