About the 2021 IIHF World Ice Hockey Championship, Latvia: 

The 2021 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship is the 85th championship, being held from the 21st of May to the 6th of June this year in the capital of Latvia, Riga – Latvia is hosting the championship for the second time in the history of the event. 

National teams from 16 countries are participating in the hockey championship, which will play 64 games in the tournament. 

The games will take place at Arena Riga and the Olympic Sports Centre nearby. The Latvian national hockey team will play seven games.

Latvijas Pasts (Latvian Post) has issued a set of postage stamps, dedicated to this year’s World Hockey Championship.  

The Postage Stamp: 

The Hockey Championship Stamp has a print run of 50,000 copies and its face value is €1.71, which corresponds to the postage of letter-post items in the weight class from 101 to 500 grams within Latvia. 

The Philatelic releases designed by the artist Ģirts Grīva feature Spiky the Hedgehog, the official mascot of this year’s championship, and the official logo of the championship.

A First Day Cover (FDC) with a print run of 1,000 copies is also being issued by Latvijas Pasts. 

The FDC is titled "PASAULES CEMPIONATS HOKEJA LATVIJA, Riga" (meaning "Hockey World Championship, Latvia, Riga"), at left.

At top right is affixed the 1.71 Euro Stamp issued on the occasion. The special Cancellation Handstamp/Postmark shows the World Hockey Championship logo in the centre together with the name. The cancellation is of Riga Posy Office and is dated - "21.05.2021".
