About Europa 2021 - Stamps:

EUROPA Stamps are special stamps issued by European postal administrations.

They bear the official EUROPA logo, a PostEurop registered trademark under the aegis of PostEurop in which Europe is the central theme.

EUROPA stamp issues are among the most collected and most popular stamps in the world and have been issued for over 60 years.

Every year a new theme is assigned by PostEurop and all participating countries issue stamps with their own interpretation of the theme. The theme for 2021 is "Endangered National Wildlife"

More about EUROPA Postage Stamps:

EUROPA Postage stamps (also known as Europa - CEPT - European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations - until 1992) are special stamps issued by European Postal Administrations/Enterprises and bears the official EUROPA logo, a PostEurop registered trademark under the aegis of PostEurop in which Europe is the central theme.

EUROPA stamps underline cooperation in the posts domain, aimed at promotion of philately. They also build awareness of the common roots, culture and history of Europe and its common goals.

As such, EUROPA stamp issues are among the most collected and most popular stamps in the world.

Since the first issue in 1956, EUROPA stamps have been a tangible symbol of Europe's desire for closer integration and co-operation.

In 1993, PostEurop became responsible for issuing EUROPA stamps.

When CEPT decided to focus more on telecommunications in 1993, PostEurop took over the management of the Europa issues. The CEPT logo was replaced by a new logo created by PostEurop i.e. the word "EUROPA" leaning towards the right hand side.

Each year, PostEurop's "Stamps & Philately Group" selects the EUROPA stamp theme:

About Europa 2021 - "Endangered National Wildlife Stamps issued by Correios de Portugal (CTT- Post of Portugal):

This year’s PostEurop stamp theme is ‘Endangered National Wildlife’, and Correios de Portugal (CTT - Post of Portugal) has depicted the European Pond Terrain ("Emys orbicularis") and the Saramugo ("Anaecypris hispanica") which are critically endangered.

These beautiful stamps feature species that are locally registered from "Critically Endangered" through to "Near Threatened".

The EUROPA Stamps issued by Correios de Portugal (CTT- Post of Portugal) features the European Pond Terrain ("Emys orbicularis") and the Saramugo ("Anaecypris hispanica"):

A Miniature Sheet containing the two "EUROPA" Stamps of 0.88 Euro each depicting the two stamps variants.

The European Pond Terrapin ("Emys orbicularis"):

It is easily identified by its dark colour, speckled with yellow spots that form streaks on each shell plate.

It prefers slow-moving or still waterways with good quality and abundant aquatic vegetation where it can hide, since it is a discreet creature that dives at the slightest sign of danger.

This animal has a widespread distribution in Europe and North Africa, but has highly dispersed and fragmented populations, particularly in Portugal, where it is considered a rare and endangered species (EN).

It is seen primarily in the South of the country, especially in the Guadiana basin. Its main threats are water pollution and the destruction of natural wetlands, as well as the introduction of exotic freshwater turtles, which are very popular among aquarists.

The Saramugo ("Anaecypris hispanica"):

This is a small freshwater fish that is 6 to 7 cm in length, with a small head and large eyes, and silver to pinkish color with numerous small dark spots along its flanks. It prefers shallow waterways with low to moderate current and clean oxygen-rich waters, with abundant aquatic vegetation.

In the Portuguese Guadiana basin, this Iberian endemic species only occurs in certain tributaries, such as the Ardila or Odeleite rivers. With extremely fragmented and severely declining populations, it is critically endangered (CR), essentially due to water pollution and the destruction of its native habitats (e.g. due to water abstraction or aggregate extraction).

A First Day Cover (FDC) bearing a Cancelled Miniature Sheet (MS) of the two "EUROPA" stamps at right.

The FDC is titled "Especies Amecadas" ("Endangered Species") at left and shows the Saramugo.

The special Cancellation Handstamp/Postmark shows an image of the European Pond Terrapin in the centre. The Cancellation is of Lisbon Post Office and the cancellation is dated - "07.05.2021".

A Full Sheet (FS) of ten stamps depicting the Saramogo variant.

A First Day Cover bearing Cancelled "EUROPA" stamps printed by Correios de Portugal (CTT- Post of Portugal) on behalf of Azores, Madeira and the Mainland (Portugal), bearing one "EUROPA" Stamp each, issued for them.

A Maxi Card featuring the Saramugo. A Maxi Card has all three - the photograph/picture, the Cancellation stamp as well as the postage stamp on the same side.

A Collectible featuring the Miniature Sheets issued for the Azores, Madeira and Portugal cancelled with the Special Cancellation Handstamp/Postmark.
