1762) The Historical Centre of Toledo, Spain: A Postage Stamp of 5.80 Euro highlighting the UNESCO World Heritage City of Toledo issued by Correos (Spanish Post)  Issue Date:19.03.2021:

About Historical Center Of Toledo, Spain:

Every year, Correos (Spanish Post) issues a stamp dedicated to a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The instant issue is dedicated to the Historic Center of Toledo, inscribed on the privileged list of UNESCO World Heritage Cities.

Toledo which is a city of the three cultures, is testimony of different civilizations that passed through Spain and that left their mark on the fabric of its streets and squares:

Roman City, Visigothic capital, part of the Emirate of Córdoba, center of the Christian Reconquest or seat of the court of Carlos I of Spain and V of Germany.

Walking through its streets takes one back in time to the City's past, which is  rich in art, culture, customs and religions.

In its historic center one can discover reminiscences of those three cultures so relevant in the La Mancha capital: the Jewish, the Muslim and the Christian.

Of Christian Toledo, its Alcázar, the Cathedral of Santa María, churches, convents and monasteries such as that of San Juan de los Reyes stand out.

From its Arab past the urban fabric of narrow and winding streets is preserved, and mosques such as the Cristo de la Luz, made of brick and masonry, interlaced arches and wooden roofs.

The Jewish presence can be traced in the Synagogues of El Tránsito and Santa María la Blanca.

The city also attracted great artists of universal renown, such as Domenikos Theotokopoulos, El Greco, who resided in Toledo from 1577 until his death and has also become one of the most significant emblems of the city.

Adds the UNESCO Book titled TREASURES OF THE WORLD" in my personal library:

" Toledo is a repository of more than 2,000 years of history with architectural and artistic masterpieces that are the product of several civilisations and their three religions - Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

A centre of power for centuries, the city was successively a self-governing Roman municipium, the capital of the Visigothic Kingdom, a fortress of the Emirates of Cordoba, an outpost of theChristian kingdoms fighting the Moors and, in the sixteenth century, the temporary seat of supreme  power under the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain Charles V, who endowed it with the status of imperial and crowned city.

During the Renaissance the city became one of the most important artistic centres in Spain.

Ironically, the irreversible economic and political decadence of Toledo after 1561 when Philip II of Spain chose Madrid as his capital, miraculously spared this museum-city.

Each set of inhabitants left their mark on Toledo - Rome with vestiges of the circus, aqueduct and sewer; the remains of Visigoth walls; the Islamic monuments of the Emirates of Cordoba; and remarkable churches and synagogues built after the reconquest of 1085.

Furthermore, Toledo possesses a broad range of medieval structures - walls and fortified buildings, bridges, streets and houses."
