The "Coin of the Year Program" (COTY) in 2021, is now in its 38th year. It is an internationally conducted competition presented by "World Coin News" to recognize outstanding coin design and innovation worldwide.
The 2021 COTY program was sponsored by "The Journal of East Asian Numismatics", "NumisCollect" and "China Gold Coin Incorporation". The Competition honors coins dated 2019 in 10 categories of competition as decided by an international panel of judges.
More than 1,000 Coins from 45 coin issuing entities around the world are considered by the Panel, which selects a total of 100 nominees from the various countries/entities - i.e. 10 coins in each of the 10 Award categories.
A ballot sheet of these 100 nominees is sent to an international panel of judges, who vote for their picks and one coin is declared the winner in each category. Once the 10 winners are selected, the judges consider the 10 finalists for the ultimate Coin Of The Year Award (COTY-2021).

"The Eagle has landed." The now-famous phrase spoken by United States astronaut Neil Armstrong was a phrase heard across the globe when he and Buzz Aldrin were the first humans to land on the moon on 20.07.1969.
The United States Mint One Dollar - 2019 dated Silver Coin commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing and is the winner of the 2021 Coin of the Year Awards.
Seen on the Reverse, concave side of the coin is depicted a footprint on the lunar surface. Inscriptions “MERCURY,” “GEMINI” and “APOLLO" are separated by phases of the moon. Together, these design elements represent the efforts of the United States space program leading up to the first manned moon landing.
On the lower periphery is inscribed "LIBERTY".
The Obverse, convex design features a representation of a close-up of the famous “Buzz Aldrin on the Moon” photograph taken July 20, 1969, that shows just the visor and part of the helmet of Aldrin. The reflection in the helmet includes Armstrong, the United States flag and the lunar lander, "Eagle."
