The Royal Dutch Mint has launched a special Coin issue in collaboration with the ALS Foundation Netherlands. The ALS Foundation Netherlands raises funds for medical research of the cause and treatment of ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) and the related diseases PMA and PLS. ALS is a neuromuscular condition that leads to muscle malfunction or failure. They also aim to raise awareness for the condition and wish to realise better care and a higher quality of life for patients and their loved ones.
No time to waste:
Who is diagnosed with ALS, loses all his/her time. The clock keeps ticking and cannot be stopped. Although research is conducted all over the world, the cause for ALS remains unknown. Hope for a future – given the average life expectancy of 3 to 5 years after the diagnosis – remains futile for the 1,500 current patients in the Netherlands. There is no time to waste.
The Coin (Issue with special effect):
To give extra power to the new “No time to waste” campaign by the ALS Foundation Netherlands, the coin issue depicts a clock.
The clock actually seems to work: the clock hands move as one moves/tilts the coin.
This special effect creates a different issue every time one looks at it, depending on the angle and the light.
The clock symbolises how time is taken from patients and their loved ones.
The Reverse of this clockwork issue shows a detailed reproduction of the inside of a clock. The issues are struck in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) quality. This means brand new stamps are used, which makes them extra shiny.
