On 03.11.2020, Latvijas Banka (Bank of Latvia) has issued a Silver Collector Coin titled - "Linden Leaf" dedicated to ecology, emphasising the importance of taking good care of our environment and natural resources. The Coin highlights and promotes ecological causes and activities not only in Latvia, but world-wide.

This Collector Coin was developed as an environment-friendly project - recycled silver was used for its minting, and recycled paper was used for its packaging and informational materials.

Ecology has become a major topic of today's agenda because of changes affecting our environment. With an increasing number of people moving to urban areas, one of the most important challenges for urban developers is to make cities as pleasant to live in and green as possible. This has resulted in the concept of a sustainable city, where everything is in balance with the environment/nature.

This unusually designed Silver Coin gives us the example of Riga, the capital of Latvia.

The Riga experience:

In comparison to other big urban cities, Riga, Latvia's capital city and largest metropolis, is comparatively green in terms of open spaces and clean air. This quality is becoming more essential with more urban development.

Green areas improve the micro-climate since they purify the air and water, thus improving human health. They are both a cultural heritage and part of an easy economical solution to reduce the human impact on the environment.

Like a leaf has its venation pattern, a city also has a network of streets, overpassed and roads. The network of Riga streets has been designed for people, connecting them with places in the urban environment, similar to veins of a leaf transporting substances throughout the leaf.

The Linden Tree is one of the most common and resistant trees one sees in Riga.

This tree, which lives up to 200 to 300 years, symbolises one of the most precious resources of the city. Linden Trees capture large amounts of dust and give city dwellers clean air in return. In a year, one healthy tree produces oxygen for at least 10 persons. Nowadays, this common and simple component of nature has to be appreciated and cherished.

Urban nature is extremely beneficial, but also critically vulnerable. This is the balance humans have to strike to preserve our urban environment. Every human being can make his/her contribution to shaping a greener and more livable urban environment by changing or adapting our daily habits.

The Coin:

The "Koninklijke Nederlandse Munt" (Royal Dutch Mint) at their facilities in Houten, on behalf of the "Latvijas Banka" (Bank of Latvia).

The Silver Coins have been minted in the shape of a Linden Leaf.

On the Reverse of the 5 Euro Silver Coin design highlights the similarity to streets and paths which resemble the network of veins nourishing the leaf itself. The design also includes areas of open spaces and a waterway.

On the Obverse of the 5 Euro Silver Coin is prominently featured the arrangement of the intricately detailed veins in a leaf.

The inscriptions read - "LATVIJA. 5 EURO. 2020" (all placed at different positions).

The specifications of the Silver coin are:

Denomination: 5 Euro; Metal Composition: .925 Fineness Silver (Ag); Weight: 18.1 grams; Length: 32.0 mm; Coin Quality: Proof; Mintage: 5,000 pieces; Designers: Marcis Kalnins (graphic design), Ligita Franckevica (plaster model); Minted byKoninklijke Nederlandse Munt (Royal Dutch Mint); On behalf of"Latvijas Banka" (Bank of Latvia); Year: 2020.
