1557) The Polytechnic University of Bucharest, Romania: Celebrating the 100th Anniversary milestone (1920-2020) with the issue of a 10 Lei Silver Coin by the National Bank of Romania: Date of Coin issue: 13.10.2020:
Politehnica University of Bucharest is the largest technical university in Romania.
In 1818, the traditions of the University were connected to the founding of the first higher technical school in Wallachiaby Gheorghe Lazar, when a modern technical school was established called "Superior School for Surveying Engineers" ("Scoala Tehnica Superioara pentru Ingineri Hotarnici") within the "Academic School for Philosophy and Mathematical Sciences of the Saint Sava Princely Academy".
In 1832, the School was reorganised into several courses like Trigonometry, Geodesy, Minerology, Engineering Graphics, Descriptive Geometry, mechanical elements appliedto ordinary machines, principles of building roads and bridges, elements of Architecture etc.
In 1862, the Ruler of the United Principalities - Alexandru Ioan Cuza established through another Princely Decree a set of rules for the Organisation of Civil Engineers.
In 1881, an admission test was introduced - the top priority being the quality of candidates selected for admission.
In 1890, at the National School of Bridges and Roads, a new Commission was set up, with the chief objective being to issue equivalency certificates for the Engineering Diplomas obtained abroad, thus transforming this National School into a model for evaluating higher technical studies.
The Great Union of Romania in 1918, resurrected the hopes of Banat Romanians towards fulfilling a scientific and economic purpose, to truly identify the interest and requirements of most of the inhabitants of Banat to establish a higher polytechnic school.
On 11.11.1920, King Ferdinand I signed the Decree Law on the establishment of the Polytechnic School in Timisoara, thus responding to the wishes of Romanians from Banat. King Ferdinand I mentioned that - "It is not the walls that make a school, but the spirit that reigns in it" This has become the motto of the school.
In 1948-1992, the name of the school was -"The Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest". For some years it was called "Institut Politehnic Georghe Gheorgheiu-Dej Bucuresti". Based on a resolution of the Senate (11/1992), the Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest turned into "University Politehnica of Bucharest".
Achievements:
Since its establishment, the Polytechnic University of Timisoara has kept the quality record of the Educational Act which, doubled by a scientific research activity at the highest level, has resulted in generations of well-trained engineers, specialists in their field, who have established the prestige of the Polytechnic School in Romania and abroad.
The University ranks among the top two Universities in Romania and is placed among the top 575 Universities out of 9,000 universities in the world that have research and study programmes in the field of Engineering and have made important contributions at the Regional level in their countries. In Europe, the University is among the top 30.
On 11.11.2019, the Politehnica Timisoara Universities entered its 100th year of its existence.
The Commemorative Coin:
On the Reverse of the 10 Lei Silver Coin is seen an image of the building of the first pavilion of the Polytechnic School of Timisoara, inaugurated in the presence of King Ferdinand I and Queen Maria.
The inscription on the upper periphery reads - UNIVERSITATEA POLITEHHNICA TIMISOARA" ( meaning "Polytechnic University of Timisoara") and on the lower half of the Coin "100 ANI" (meaning " 100th Anniversary").
On the Obverse of the 10 Lei Silver Coin is seen a left facing effigy of King Ferdinand I and hais quote - "Nu zidurile fac o scoala, ci spiritul care domneste intr-insa" (meaning "It is not the walls that make a school, but the spirit that reigns inside it"
On the upper left periphery is mentioned the country name "ROMANIA", in the centre left is the year of issue "2020", the denomination "10 LEI" and the Coat of Arms of Romania.
